Though the invitation to this prestigious event is both a privilege and an exciting new venture for the Choir, it also presents its own challenges, with 7 of the 17 pieces in the programme to be performed in Welsh. RMVC is not un-used to singing in other languages, including, Maori, Italian and Welsh, but getting our mainly English tongues around the phonetics can be tricky. However, we’re well on our way in rehearsals, and fingers crossed will be word (and accent) perfect by the big day.

If you’d like tickets for this event visit www.royalalberthall.com but hurry they really are going fast.

Tue, 15 Mar 2016 00:00:00 +0000 A Distinction and a Cup! https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/another-news-item https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/another-news-item
Neil Jenkins, internationally known tenor, conductor, music editor, and formerly first tenor in the renowned vocal group 'The Kings Singers', was the adjudicator; RMVC the male voice choir under his thoughtful scrutiny. With knees slightly trembling the Choir took its place on stage at Thornden Hall to perform five pieces from the Choir’s repertoire including Chattanooga Choo Choo, Unchained Melody and the Welsh Prayer. The occasion was Southampton Music Festival Choir Competition, and for us taking part was a valuable chance to get an independent assessment of just how good (or otherwise) we really are.

Peppering his comments with light humour Neil Jenkins gave an honest and useful critique of our performance of each number leading to an overall verdict which was indeed music to our ears. Congratulating RMVC Neil awarded RMVC an amazing eighty nine percent distinction, and that earned the Choir its very first cup presented on the night to Musical Director, Marion Maxey.

Not bad for our initial foray into the world of being formally judged. So very well done to ‘the Boys’
Tue, 22 Mar 2016 00:00:00 +0000 RMVC’s New Website Goes Live! https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/some-good-news https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/some-good-news
Updated and redesigned, Romsey Male Voice Choir’s new website has just gone live. The President’s wife, Jan Lawrenson, generously agreed to take a lead on the modernisation, working with Chairman Geoff Skinner and with the help of Stan’s wife Alison. After taking soundings about what was needed Jan was instrumental in achieving the end result, but from the start she and Geoff were clear about priorities “We wanted to create a site straightforward to navigate so visitors are able to find what they want to find quickly and easily. It was also crucial to give Choir members a user-friendly, up to date Members Page with the all-important information about rehearsals, concerts and so on. It has taken a while to get the site live and it’s surprising just how much work was involved, however, we really hope you like it”

Whether you are a friend of the Choir, someone looking for information about a concert, or a Choir member, if you have time to slow down and linger a little why not explore the pages, hear us sing, spot who you know in the photo gallery, and learn more about RMVC and what it does.

“These days a good website is an essential. It needs to be user-friendly as well as engaging interest and allowing people to get the information they need when they need it. Everyone visiting RMVC’s Website is important to us; that’s why we’ve worked so hard to get it right and RMVC is grateful to Jan and Geoff for doing just that.”

- Terry Morrison, Deputy Chair & Coordinator of Publicity
Wed, 06 Apr 2016 00:00:00 +0000 Our gratitude to the Garfield Weston Foundation https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/our-gratitude-to-the-garfield-weston-foundation https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/our-gratitude-to-the-garfield-weston-foundation
The Garfield Weston Foundation is a *“family-founded, grant-making trust which has been supporting charities across the UK for over 50 years.” Its aim is “to support organisations that have effective solutions to helping those most in need.” In this the Foundation “supports a broad range of organisations and activities that share a commitment to making a positive impact to the lives of the communities in which they work, and that are driven by a desire to achieve excellence.”

For Romsey Male Voice Choir the grant offers an opportunity for us to drive forward our aims to support young musicians; raise more funds for good causes, and continually improve our singing for the entertainment of concert audiences and the benefit of our Choir members. In the superb setting of Chandlers Ford Methodist Church, the two choirs entertained a lively audience with varied and challenging songs from their repertoires under the leadership of Musical Directors Marion Maxey and Victoria Barlow.

For RMVC this was the second concert held in the Methodist Church, and it didn’t disappoint. Radcliffe on Trent MVC produced memorable performances of well-known and not so well known pieces including Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus, an animated version of Sweet Georgia Brown, The Sound of Silence, and Gweddir Arglwydd by Edward Rhys Harry. RMVC, also at its best, led the way with The Cole Porter Medley, followed up with I dreamed a dream and Bring Him Home from Les Miserables, Bizet’s Serenade and an onomatopoeic version of Chatanooga Choo Choo. However, it was when the two choirs came together on stage that the rafters in the church roof were truly raised with the power of male singing in four pieces culminating in the MVC favourite An American Trilogy.

RMVC concert organiser, Dave Witt, was delighted with the evening. “It’s a lot of hard work to bring a concert to fruition, but when you make new friends, as we have with Radcliffe on Trent MVC, and then you hear the audience clapping its appreciation, there’s no doubt it’s all worth it. Thanks so much to the Methodist Church, to Marion Maxey and Victoria Barlow, and to Brian Budden and Gill Hawkes accompanists. We couldn’t do it without you! Most of all thanks to Radcliffe on Trent MVC for sharing our concert, and of course our very grateful appreciation to all who bought tickets to hear us sing. We hope you’ll come again.”

Ticket and refreshment profits from the concert will benefit Wessex Cancer Trust and Action for Children.

RMVC will be singing again with Radcliffe on Trent MVC at the 25th London Welsh Festival of Male Choirs in the Albert Hall on October 15.
Mon, 18 Apr 2016 00:00:00 +0000 Our pleasure to meet and sing with the New Forest Chamber Choir https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/our-pleasure-to-meet-and-sing-with-the-new-forest-chamber-choir https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/our-pleasure-to-meet-and-sing-with-the-new-forest-chamber-choir
It was an evening that should have happened in New Milton, but a double booking meant instead the New Forest Chamber Choir making the trip to Romsey as our guest performers at the concert on Saturday at the United Reformed Church in Romsey.

The night may have been damp, but the audience at the URC was as ever warm and appreciative treated as it was to a splendid variety of music from both choirs. RMVC sang some of our best loved songs from the musicals including I Dreamed a Dream, Bring him Home and Bui Doi alongside a number of pieces in Welsh and English to be performed again when we sing at the 25th Festival of Choirs at the Albert Hall.

The Chamber Choir delighted with their two sets showcasing the talents of their singers and Musical Director Alison Russell-Hayward, including a show-stealing performance by the youngest soprano, a word-perfect eight year old. Of the pieces sung, Kyrie from A Little Jazz Mass and the Best of Bond Medley were surprising and entertaining providing a perfect contrast to the slower songs and a moving performance of The Peace of God by the Choir’s patron John Rutter. The Concert ended with the joint finale You’ll Never Walk Alone.

Rounding off a great evening RMVC headed to the Phoenix Pub in Romsey for its Afterglow and to carry on singing!

We would like to thank Alison Russell-Hayward and the New Forest Chamber Choir for accepting our invitation to take part in the concert. We thank also our own Marion Maxey and Richard Stannard who always do us proud, and finally grateful thanks go to the Phoenix Pub for once again giving us refreshments when we needed them most.
Wed, 08 Jun 2016 00:00:00 +0000 Doing what we do best to celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/doing-what-we-do-best-to-celebrate-the-queens-90th-birthday https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/doing-what-we-do-best-to-celebrate-the-queens-90th-birthday
The occasion was blessed with a balmy, dry evening. The Abbey Gardens looked resplendent with an audience settled in colourful gazebos or sitting around tables to enjoy a summer picnic whilst soaking up the music, including the Winchester College Jazz Band, the opera diva Demelza Stafford and, of course, our own Romsey Male Voice Choir. We did our very best, and were received well, but singing in the open air was perhaps not the easiest way to bring our music to life as the notes drifted off into the fading light without always reaching the ears of the listeners. Marion Maxey exhorted us to sing out louder and louder, forgetting our usual light and shade, and raising our voices where they should not have been raised.

HOWEVER…. although we may not have felt the open air suited our voices, Stephanie at Swann Events and organiser of the evening, was kind enough to email saying “….I am exceedingly grateful to all the choir for your hard work, your great efforts and supportiveness, and the wonderful and vibrant contribution you all made to the evening both on and off stage. You all brought much jollity to the evening and it was so good of you all to come and join in with such enthusiasm. I heard many lovely comments about your performance.”

AND FINALLY, in case you weren’t there, when we finished by singing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ with Demelza Stafford we knew it really was a wonderful musical celebration, in a most beautiful setting……. and what could be nicer than that!

Wed, 08 Jun 2016 00:00:00 +0000 Great to be back with old friends https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/great-to-be-back-with-old-friends https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/great-to-be-back-with-old-friends
It was a long day, but it was worth it. Taking the coach to Swindon the Boys were greeted at our venue, Immanuel Church, by a wonderful spread of homemade cakes and copious cups of tea courtesy of Swindon MVC’s ladies. So not surprisingly we were off to a great start….. and then it just got better and better.

The arrival of the audience heralded the first of MD Max Brockman-More’s humorous introductions, setting the scene for a friendly evening peppered with laughter as Max’s ongoing light-hearted banter delighted all. RMCV opened the concert with I Dreamed a Dream and Bring Him Home from Les Miserables followed by three pieces also to be sung at the Royal Albert Hall in October. Swindon MVC changed the tempo with its renderings of Let All Men Sing, How Great Thou Art, an MVC favourite, Alexander’s Ragtime Band, and a new piece for the Choir called Wade in the Water. Marion Maxey then concluded the half superbly conducting a joint choir performance of An American Trilogy.

The second part of the concert proved similarly varied and (we were told) RMVC produced an outstanding delivery of the highly emotional Bui Doi from Miss Saigon as its finale to another set of four songs. But Swindon in this half set out to amuse. In the song What a Wonderful World, to the laughter of the audience, choristers were seen tongue in cheek mouthing the words ‘I love you’ towards Max Brockman-More. They continued in this vein donning eye patches and naval hats in The Song of the Jolly Rodger, before at the right moment producing stuffed parrots and waving enormous pirate flags. Certainly a novel way to pep up an old song!

MDs Marion Maxey and Max Brockman-More, with accompanists, Richard Stannard and Vicky Burton, (who do so much of the hard work) were given rousing applause, and the evening ended with You’ll Never Walk Alone, once more bringing the two Choirs together. You might think this rounded off an excellent night. Not so, choristers fired up with singing were royally entertained at an afterglow orchestrated by Swindon MVC before finally settling into the coach for the journey home.

Our grateful thanks to you Swindon MVC for the invitation to join the concert and for your splendid hospitality – we think you’re great singers and great friends – and yes, Boys, we might just ‘borrow’ a couple of your songs!
Thu, 30 Jun 2016 00:00:00 +0000 BBC South Presenter Anjana Gadgil will host the next Abbey Concert and it’s not too late to get tickets! https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/bbc-south-presenter-anjana-gadgil-will-host-the-next-abbey-concert-and-its-not-too-late-to-get-ticke https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/bbc-south-presenter-anjana-gadgil-will-host-the-next-abbey-concert-and-its-not-too-late-to-get-ticke
A local girl Anjana is on her way back to her home county after 19 years living in London and she obviously is keen to get involved in county life. A country girl, she is never happier than when at Broadlands - walking her dogs along the river. Now based in London for work, she lives in Notting Hill with her husband Tom, but she is also keen to give her commitment to worthy organisations in her home town. Asked about becoming RMVC Patron Alexandra said: 'It is a great pleasure and an honour to be a Patron of the Romsey Male Voice Choir. I will look forward to meeting the members and hearing the choir when I can. I am delighted to have been asked and will do what I can to further the success and reputation of this important and already impressive choir'.

RMVC Chairman Geoff Skinner said the Choir couldn’t be more pleased that Alexandra had said yes to his request to become a Patron, “The historic Broadlands Estate is at the centre of Romsey and Alexandra’s mother, Lady Brabourne is an active figure in the town. It is wonderful that her daughter, despite living in London, is prepared to support RMVC as she supports other local organisations. The Choir, which is an integral part of the rich cultural life of Romsey and its environs, has over the years raised thousands of pounds for charities alongside helping the development of young singers and musicians. I am quite sure that with Alexandra as Patron we will be able to do even more and we very much look forward to welcoming her to one of our concerts in the near future.”

Click here to read more about the Honourable Alexandra Knatchbull.
Mon, 18 Jul 2016 00:00:00 +0000 Chilling, Chatting & Clowning – just the right ingredients for ‘fun taken seriously’ https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/chilling-chatting-clowning-just-the-right-ingredients-for-fun-taken-seriously https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/chilling-chatting-clowning-just-the-right-ingredients-for-fun-taken-seriously
It started gently enough with gazebos and chairs settled amicably into the newly mown grass, cool boxes unpacked and glasses filled as voices mingled with voices creating a lively buzz of happy conversation. Then slowly – with only a little coercion from Geoff – people headed for something more strenuous doing the rounds of the multitude of silly (but skilful) games that were dotted around the garden and overflowing into the long field beyond.

The two pedants, Geoff and Stan argued humorously over the distance between the measuring sticks for the welly wanging, going back and forth with the tape measure, before David Grey showed the way chucking the wellies with a vengeance and beaming in the belief that his throw must definitely be the longest. He hadn’t of course reckoned on youth outdoing him, but Chris and Marion’s son David did just that achieving a distance that couldn’t be and wasn’t beaten. And then the competitiveness just got livelier and sillier as the afternoon went on. Tossing the mini caber created amusement for those who could lift let alone toss it; crazy croquet, boule in a bucket, target bowls and golf chipping allowed some to show off their prowess whilst others simply did it their own way.

All this time Bonnie, the resident black Labrador, raced ravenously around from one picnic to another in hope of the titbits she wasn’t allowed to have, while Dave and Elise’s dog, Molly, more restrained, just succumbed graciously to soothing strokes and pats from passers-by. For choir members as well as Geoff’s visiting neighbours and the two dogs it was an entirely pleasurable afternoon. Good company, great weather, a lovely setting and enough of the sort of things that kept both Geoff’s grandchildren, choristers and their partners content, no doubt giving a lie to the premise that there’s no such thing as ‘second childhoods’.

Our thanks to Pamela and Geoff for literally preparing the ground, and for welcoming RMVC to their home, and to Dave and Geoff for their time and ingenuity in creating and setting up the games. It was fun! And for those Choir members needing to know who won which game Jan has put the names together with all photos on the Members Page.
Tue, 19 Jul 2016 00:00:00 +0000 What a venue; what a host & what a fantastic sound https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/what-a-venue-what-a-host-what-a-fantastic-sound https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/what-a-venue-what-a-host-what-a-fantastic-sound
It was fabulous to have BBC South Today Presenter Anjana Gadgil as our host, and great to be joined by local dignitaries the Test Valley Mayor, Councillor Karen Hamilton, Romsey Town Mayor Councillor John Parker as well as RMVC’s very own regular supporter Romsey MP Caroline Nokes, recently appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department of Work & Pensions . In speaking of Caroline’s new role compere Terry Morrision raised a laugh when he couldn’t resist quipping ‘never mind the work we’re more interested in the pensions!’

Seriously though what a wonderful rollercoaster evening of music with RMVC singing songs in Welsh, Maori and Italian as well as English and guest performers Romsey Ladies Choir and local soprano Annie Tatnall adding yet more variety in their performances. Topping and tailing the event Anjana Gadgil thanked RMVC for a warm welcome and “A night of wonderful music in a very special venue; it was a real privilege to be able to attend.”

RMVC’s programme was notable for the Choir performing several pieces to be sung again in October at the London Welsh Festival of Male Voice Choirs in the Royal Albert Hall. The Choir also revived old favourites from Les Miserables, and gave another emotional rendering of Bui Doi from Miss Saigon. Songs from the shows featured as well in the repertoire of Romsey Ladies Choir’s together with a specially composed Gaelic Blessing by Kate Jackson. Making the most of the wonderful acoustics in the Abbey, so perfectly suited to a soprano voice, Annie Tatnall delighted the audience with her five pieces ending in a beautiful performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Poor Wandering One. The evening culminated in a joint finale and a rousing rendition of the popular Rodgers and Hammerstein song You’ll Never Walk Alone.

The audience was lively and appreciative and perhaps more importantly helped us raise a goodly sum towards Abbey Funds. However, you’ll have to watch this space to discover exactly what was raised when we present a cheque to the Reverend Cannon Tim Sledge later in the month.

Our thanks on this occasion go to Anjana (do hope we see you again after your move to Hampshire); to RMVC member Mike Bull for his hard work in taking the lead on organising the concert; obviously to our guest performers – thanks ladies – and to our own WAGs or Green Sashes, always in evidence and supportive. Finally we are grateful to the Abbey and Abbey staff for their help.
Tue, 09 Aug 2016 00:00:00 +0000 Andrew gets out RMVC’s cheque book to boost Abbey Funds https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/andrew-gets-out-rmvcs-cheque-book-to-boost-abbey-funds https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/andrew-gets-out-rmvcs-cheque-book-to-boost-abbey-funds
The money, raised at RMVC’s summer concert in the Abbey, brings to a total exceeding £13,000 donated by the Choir to charities in the current financial year. An invitation to the London Welsh Festival of Male Voice Choirs at The Royal Albert Hall could only have been a dream all those years ago but now it was real and the day had arrived.

We had been warned that involvement would require dedication, an 18 month period of disruption to our established routine and the need to have 18 pieces concert ready many unknown to us and in a language which for me in all honesty resembled a particularly bad scrabble hand.

It goes without saying that the prize was waiting and the challenge taken. I am so very, very grateful for the learning schedules prepared, the hours of rehearsal undertaken and the background administration put in place to make the event possible.

I am also hugely grateful to those members of the choir who, whilst finding the learning commitment a step too far and thus involvement on the day impossible stayed loyal to the choir often attending rehearsals and encouraging the choir with supportive comments and pre-event good wishes.

It would have been so very unfortunate and upsetting had those members become disenchanted or even left the choir a position which, I understand, happened with a significant percentage of one of the participating choir’s membership.

To our musical director Marion what can I say, immense thanks for undertaking a lengthy period of time preparing Royal Albert Hall music as opposed to her own planned and preferred repertoire. Devotion well beyond the call of duty so soon after taking up the baton.

Huge and grateful thanks to Terry Morrison who was more than instrumental in furthering our application and ensuring our invitation. Terry’s involvement post invitation was quite unbelievable liaising with the London Welsh Male Voice Choir to ensure that we were ready on the day with tickets in place for our families and supporters. To Dave Witt, our concert secretary, as ever we are hugely indebted. Seamless travel arrangements for all concerned ensuring a jolly day out for all rather than a chaotic trip and no doubt some of our members still in London trying to get home!!

To our section leaders, marshalls on the day a big thank you and to our treasurer Andrew for handling the comprehensive transactions associated with the event.

To our chairman Geoff my thanks for maintaining the choir’s balance as we prepared for the Albert Hall and his immense enthusiasm for steering the choir committee during this period.

Indeed, my thanks to each and everyone concerned for what was a huge logistical undertaking and performance.

And of the day itself – a few of my recollections: The car park banter, choristers pumped up adrenalin beginning to flow but otherwise apprehensive.

A few of our number suffering the colds and flu that had plagued Romsey in the weeks before but determined to be there and give their all.

Journey complete – the splendour of the building – could it be that we were really there to perform.

The first sight of the arena and stage lit but empty – awesome – really quite awesome. And then we go to our positions not quite as expected split each side of the mighty organ but high up and over-looking what was to be a musical spectacular.

Rehearsal time begins and a thought comes to mind. There have been a number of occasions in the past where I have been asked “you must be proud” (of the choir) – well I can truly say that this was a moment which surpassed all and by a country mile. From my position in the back row I drank freely of the atmosphere and looked upon the faces of our choristers in their splendid green jackets, oh yes I was proud, proud of the choir and every chorister and friend. It has often been said that we are more than a choir - a family and this was the ultimate family outing.

Rehearsal over. There was not really any difference in dealing with the concert apart from the addition of the audience! Some 5000 plus people eagerly awaiting the drop of the baton and the music to start. What an evening, what an event, never to be forgotten and after how fitting to hear our musical director, Marion and accompanist Brian acknowledged by name.

And so accolades to all, a memory never to be forgotten.

Your very, very proud President.
Tue, 08 Nov 2016 00:00:00 +0000 Bells at Bells - RMVC keeps up the tradition https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/bells-at-bells-rmvc-keep-up-the-tradition https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/bells-at-bells-rmvc-keep-up-the-tradition
It’s a Romsey Male Voice Choir tradition started by Choir President Keith Lawrenson shortly after the Choir was formed in 1995 when he was a partner at Bells Solicitors, and which has been generously continued by the current partners.

A tot or two of whisky and a mince pie in the Solicitors Offices to give a boost to the Choir before joining in with Carols in the Square in Romsey. As Keith quipped “Some traditions just need to be continued. The whisky warms the cockles and lubricates the voice – at least that’s our excuse and we’re sticking to it!”
Fri, 23 Dec 2016 00:00:00 +0000 Amazing Marion Made it Happen https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/amazing-marion-made-it-happen https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/amazing-marion-made-it-happen
For Marion the night was a celebration, not just of the huge achievements she has made in leading no less than five choirs, but also a celebration of her 50th birthday, something she absolutely couldn’t forget as the concert progressed.

A buzzing and friendly Romsey Abbey was packed with an audience indeed treated to a superbly executed, diverse and thoroughly enjoyable evening of song. The choristers, spanning the generations, performed in a shared tribute to their talented, dedicated, much-loved music teacher and musical director, and their pleasure in being a part of a special night was much in evidence. If anyone doubted Marion’s popularity it was made very visible through choir videos played to the audience praising what she gives to so many people and wishing her Happy Birthday. And not once, but twice the whole audience also joined voices in singing Happy Birthday to Marion.

It would be almost impossible to pick out any one element of the concert programme to highlight, so suffice to say all five choirs were magnificent and each gave of its best. The atmosphere and ambiance in the Abbey proved the perfect setting and the audience was warm and enthusiastic in its applause. Amongst those welcomed on the night were the Mayors of Romsey Town and Test Valley, Romsey’s MP Caroline Nokes, and Romsey Male Voice Choir’s new Patron, the Honourable Alexandra Knatchbull, for whom this was her first experience of an RMVC performance.

Left with one memory of a truly memorable event it has to be the combined choirs’ finale singing ‘Unchained Melody’ – at once joyful and tear-jerking. Then, for those of us lucky enough to retire to the Abbey Primary School for the Birthday Afterglow (again in celebration of Marion) we were able to enjoy a wonderful vocal finish to a wonderful night.

Finally I’m sure Marion would want us to mention the thanks she voiced for the generous support she had from husband Chris and many others in the run up to the concert and on the night.

The five Choirs performing were:

Romsey Youth Choir: Romsey Youth Children’s Choir: Romsey Abbey Primary School: Romsey Voices: Romsey Male Voice Choir.

A retiring collection for Romsey Abbey and the Romsey Abbey C of E Primary School raised the magnificent sum of £1860.

Wed, 22 Feb 2017 00:00:00 +0000 Two Cups - and the Boys did it in style! https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/two-cups-and-the-boys-did-it-in-style https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/two-cups-and-the-boys-did-it-in-style
Firstly, Chairman Geoff took his passengers on a lengthy if scenic route to the assembly point in Hursley. Then the bonhomie of Choir Marshall Kevin was abruptly curtailed when he discovered his jacket remained firmly on the hanger at home. Inevitably this necessitated a risky ‘speed-trap’ dash to rescue it, which in itself turned into something akin to a Whitehall farce (but that’s another story). Finally, a bemused coach driver, berated for turning up late, showed his schedule actually had him absolutely on time. Given this tense start it was altogether fortuitous that we managed to arrive in time at the Guildhall in Bath, though with just 15 minutes to ‘do our makeup’ and head off to St Michael’s Church where we were to perform in the first category of the competition ‘Best Male Choir’.

We sang Y Tangnefeddwyr and What Shall we do with the Drunken Sailor and waited while gentle, if inciteful, judging by the friendly lady judge left us in suspense of our fate. One rather prestigious choir we were sure was likely to pip us at the post. However, it seemed we had struck more than the right note when, to our absolute joy she announced we were the winners, earning us the Arthur Trowbridge Cup, which we excitedly held aloft. Only the second cup RMVC had ever been awarded. Then onward to the next category judged ‘Best Sacred Music’ performing two contrasting pieces, A Welsh Prayer and Ride the Chariot. Another holding our breaths moment followed as the judge deliberated and commented, but once again we were announced the winners. This time our other metaphorical hand was able to hold up; the Mallory Challenge Trophy.

We were most definitely on a roll, but one more category ‘Popular Music or Show Songs was yet to come. Tension was in the air, fingers were crossed and we just knew that Bui Doi was without doubt one of our best and Chattanoga Choo Choo always gets a good reception. This time it was not to be, and deflation followed the verdict. However, is it really ‘shabby’ to be pronounced joint second out of 12 choirs after two resounding wins? Marion Maxey clearly thought not: “The consistent feedback was about our musicality and the overall enjoyment of our repertoire. For me it was lovely to have the affirmation that we are doing the right thing from a much-respected choral expert.” Chairman Geoff added. “We cannot help but be proud of this achievement. For Romsey Male Voice Choir to do so well in all three categories we know is testament to the hard work of a great bunch of dedicated singers who have the musical flexibility to successfully perform pieces in different genres, and as always rise fantastically to the occasion. But, we also know we couldn’t do this without Marion, whose talent in guiding, coaching and rehearsing us to produce our best is absolutely crucial and very much appreciated”

So, there we have it. One more competition under our belt, two more cups to add to our collection, and a terrific sense of satisfaction and a job well done. A great day, a fun day, and a day of high achievement for us singers and RMVC – what could be better than that!
Mon, 10 Apr 2017 00:00:00 +0000 The Jersey Harmony Men, friends, a great Choir and fellow fundraisers https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/the-jersey-harmony-men-friends-a-great-choir-and-fellow-fundraisers https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/the-jersey-harmony-men-friends-a-great-choir-and-fellow-fundraisers
Two years ago, Romsey Male Voice Choir enjoyed a very jolly and successful concert tour in Jersey singing with the Island’s only male choir, The Jersey Harmony Men. At the end of April, the Harmony Men returned the compliment to sing a kaleidoscope of music with RMVC at the Methodist Church in Chandlers Ford, where a full and appreciative audience helped the choirs raise the grand total of £1910 for the Eastleigh Child Contact Centre – a charity actively supported by the Church.

Both choirs sang a varied programme of arrangements from their repertoires, but the applause was loudest following joint numbers including Unchained Melody, You’ll Never Walk Alone and Bring Him Home from Les Miserables. In the audience, Vivienne Ames from the Eastleigh Child Contact Centre was enthusiastic about the evening, and grateful to RMVC for choosing to help the work of the charity.

“On behalf of the trustees of our charity I can’t thank you enough. I thoroughly enjoyed being part of the audience and it is with great pleasure that your donation will in part go to replacing some of our toys for direct use by the children. Thanks to both of the choirs for the magnificent performance of An American Trilogy as the finale to the concert, I think it outshone Elvis’s version!”

Praise indeed for the choirs, but the evening didn’t end at the finale. The Harmony Men, staying at the Chilworth Manor Hotel, were generous in hosting a splendid Afterglow complete with a most welcome buffet. Needless to say, this was supplemented by yet more singing as midnight passed and few drifted away, preferring to stretch their voices even further whilst imbibing a little liquid refreshment.

Concert secretary, Dave Witt, who played the major part in organising the event, was more than satisfied. “Performing with the Jersey Harmony Men is great fun, great entertainment and a real pleasure for RMVC. We would like to thank all who made the trip across the Channel and also say a huge thanks to the choir for the excellent Afterglow. Every hour someone in the UK receives this diagnosis and one in 500 people (one in 100 over the age of 60) suffer with it. As an ex GP John understands better than most just what that diagnosis means. When he realised his physical capabilities weren’t what they used to be, coupled with developing a slight shake in his left hand, he was referred for a brain scan, and this definitively confirmed what he had suspected.

However, John takes a positive view of his condition saying, “I’m not yet too affected, though my tremor can make, simple things like fumbling for my wallet at the till in the supermarket difficult, and frustrate other shoppers!”. At the same time, despite sometimes struggling to keep a grip on his music scores in rehearsals, John is very clear that being part of RMVC has been a huge help to him in managing at least one of the progressive symptoms he copes with day to day, explaining “A typical aspect of Parkinson’s is losing the power of the voice and its vocal range, but there’s extremely good evidence to show that regular singing minimises this particular symptom. After five years with RMVC I can testify to the benefits to my voice and also to the benefits that performing in concerts brings to my confidence, which can so easily be knocked back by a chronic condition with such visible symptoms. I feel fortunate to be part of a supportive and creative group of singers in RMVC and I’m delighted that we will be raising much needed funds through ‘Men & Magnificent Music’ for Parkinson’s UK. Although the disease can’t yet be cured, the major research commissioned by the charity into improved treatments such as new drugs, stem cell therapy and ultrasonic surgery will undoubtedly be vital for so many people in the future. This is the second time in recent years that the choir has supported what they regard as an important organisation which recognises the invaluable role played by young carers.

Along with the ongoing practical and emotional support offered by RYC they currently sponsor 10 young carers to attend an annual Young Carers Festival held at ‘Fairthorne Manor’. The money presented by RMVC will be used to enable even more local young carers the opportunity of this experience. The festival provides an opportunity for young carers to have fun in a safe environment and this year’s events include: a planetarium; fairground rides; climbing wall; silent disco; caving; paddle boarding; creative zone and chill-out zone. Chris Hall, the manager of RYC described the experience as, “A fabulous opportunity for our young carers, for some of whom this will be the first opportunity they have had to camp and the first festival they have attended.”

Mike Gardiner, who presented the cheque on behalf of RMVC said, “Before retirement I was a senior manager in the social services department of Hampshire County Council and I know well the pressures experienced by young carers. Terry Morrison, Dave Witt and Alan Willsher made it happen with sheer hard work, brilliant planning and focussed attention to every detail. RMVC definitely owes them a debt of gratitude. We are also grateful for the generosity of our four sponsors, Michael Rhodes, Bells Solicitors, Winchester University and Rathbones. Please know we greatly appreciate your support. Then more thanks must go to our Green Sashes or WAGS who were sterling in preparing the tea for the visiting choirs, manning the interval refreshment stalls and helping, where help was needed, throughout the rehearsals and concert. RMVC is indeed extremely fortunate to have such a dedicated team.

However, it was of course our amazing guest male choirs, RMVC itself, the musical directors and accompanists, Kevin Cleary, our marshal, Terry as compere and the video team, who brought the concert to life and made it so special for the wonderfully appreciative audience. And we must as well place firmly on record our thanks to Dame Esther Rantzen, who for the second time gave up her Saturday night for an RMVC concert in support of Parkinson’s UK, the chosen charity for the event. She entertained, she promoted the charity, and she made all of us feel great with her praise for the choirs’ singing. Many thanks Esther. It will be a little while before we know the final amount raised on the night, but I am confident it will prove a significant sum for a cause close to many of our hearts.

On to the concert itself. What can I say? Very well done to all the MVCs, Hart, Cowbridge, Swindon, Rushmoor and Romsey, and to all the choristers, numbering 238. The audience was at times surprised, and occasionally amused, entertained as it was with a varied selection of music from Choirs’ repertoires, featuring old favourites sung alongside less well-known pieces in a blend to satisfy all tastes. Not surprisingly though the stand out performances came when the 5 choirs joined together to fill the Abbey with the strength and depth of male voices. American Trilogy, accompanied by Richard Stannard on the Abbey organ, Gwahoddiad, conducted by RMVC Patron Hayden James, Softly as I Leave You and another favourite, Speed Your Journey, were amongst the joint numbers performed. Then finally the audience was invited to stand in unity with the choirs to sing Cwm Rhondda.

The Afterglow – well we always like to have one - and it was our wonderful MD Marion Maxey and her fellow teachers at Romsey Abbey C of E Primary School who made it possible. Food, and beverage was provided by them, and the School Hall and playground made ready to host around 300 choristers and their guests. Chatting, eating and (of course) singing was a relaxing and pleasurable way to savour the balmy summer night and complete a memorable evening before heading home.

Finally, I can’t finish without giving a huge vote of thanks from all of us at RMVC to our visiting Choirs, Hart MVC, Rushmoor MVC, Cowbridge MVC and Swindon MVC – we definitely couldn’t have done it without you Boys!

Photographs courtesy of ace photographers Terry Jamieson, Philip Clewer, and Simon Grove
Thu, 20 Jul 2017 00:00:00 +0000 Magnificent Men raise Mega Money for Parkinson's UK https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/magnificent-men-raise-mega-money-for-parkinsons-uk https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/magnificent-men-raise-mega-money-for-parkinsons-uk
Romsey Male Voice Choir’s Romsey Festival Concert ‘Men & Magnificent Music’, hosted by Dame Esther Rantzen, raised a whopping £8667.41 for the Choir’s chosen charity Parkinson’s UK. There is no doubt that year on year the Choir progresses in many ways and I am proud to have been able to take the lead during a period of noteworthy musical events, and a period when RMVC has raised the magnificent sum of over £45,000 for our nominated charities. Musical highlights have included our appearance at the Royal Albert Hall in October 2016, the Choir being judged strong enough to win trophies at music festivals in Southampton and Bath, the production of a new CD to celebrate RMVC’s 20th Anniversary, and our latest DVD of a truly memorable massed male choir concert in Romsey Abbey in July this year. This was followed by former chorister, Alan Kingwell carrying on the Choir tradition of singing the 12 Days of Christmas, a competitive belting out of the words combined with jumping up and down from seats as each table strove to outdo the others in volume and enthusiasm. Finally, before carriages awaited, in stepped the inestimable Brian Budden, effortlessly and without music, creating a medley of Christmas songs on the piano, and (no surprises) party goers as ever finished in harmonious song. Yes, it was indeed another great year for the Choir Christmas party.

From the start the room at Romsey Golf Club was packed with choristers and their partners all determined to enjoy great company and the excellent Christmas fare served up by the Golf Club staff. In his own words here’s his verdict…….

“Romsey Male Voice Choir sang alongside young soprano Nancy Longland to put on a superb show last Saturday night to a full house. The first half was full of surprises. The choir were sporting a new outfit as well as singing more pop and musical songs, like Angels and Yesterday. Even their compere was new to the job as Keith Lawrenson, who started the choir 25 years ago, added a theatrical touch to introducing the songs. Nancy may have looked slightly nervous when mis-described as a socialist rather than a soloist but performed superbly and soon looked at home on the stage. Surely one to watch for the future.

The second half saw the traditional green jacketed Romsey Male Voice Choir return. Singing a more traditional set of songs Nancy was “sandwiched in” for a second slot. There was a return for the usual compere Terry Morrison for what may have been his 100th concert. He’s lost count. Finishing off with Nessun Dorma, the choir showed its versatility in mastering the Italian words while maintaining their rich blend of male voices. The choir always accepts it owes a great deal to Director of Music Marion Maxey who has certainly made Romsey Male Voice Choir become a force to be listened to.

Side-lined by the lurgy along with a few colleagues, I just managed to get a ticket and my verdict - I was just proud to belong to such a talented bunch of singers. The sum was definitely greater than the parts and I know that all of us in Romsey Male Voice Choir were thrilled by the opportunity provided by RAODS to play at home.

And just in case anyone is wondering what it must be like to sing in a male voice choir, there is going to be a “singalong” on Monday 12 March at the Baptist Church on Bell Street at 7:30 pm. Another unusual element during the concert finale was both choirs bringing to life the wonderful hymn Gwahoddiad with RMVC performing it in Welsh and LMVC in English – not at the same time!. Then, as always the programme finally ended with the two Choirs raising the roof while jointly performing the well-known Soldiers Chorus. It was indeed a successful concert and we were grateful for LMVC’s reviving refreshments following a long, but enjoyable day.

16th June: The following morning the Choir went shopping, though shopping with a difference. In a first for RMVC, our accompanist Richard Stannard commandeered the handy piano in Nottingham’s Victoria Shopping Mall and we bravely performed a (slightly choreographed) FlashMob with no idea how this would be received. However, to our delight and relief rapturous applause ensued from the real shoppers who’d gathered around to listen. Great fun, and a repeat performance nearer to home may yet be considered.

Saturday night we were off again to sing with our second hosts and old friends Radcliffe-on- Trent MVC for what turned out to be another very special evening of song, and once more in front of an appreciative audience. The finale bringing the two choirs together for four varied pieces including An American Trilogy was especially rousing. Then, knowing both choirs’ penchant for a good Afterglow, our hosts pulled out all the stops offering a fine spread and ‘a few’ well deserved beers

17th June: Just a little weary on Sunday morning as we prepared to take to the road to go home it seemed only appropriate to leave the hotel with a rendition of Jamaica Farewell. Admittedly not our best, but still drawing applause from the hotel lobby.

Thanks: Our grateful thanks must go to our host choirs who kindly invited us to join them in song, and we were pleased to present both Chris Higgins, Chairman of Loughborough MVC and John Bartle, Chairman of Radcliffe on Trent MVC with a now traditional Tour memento in the form of a painting by RMVC’s chorister artist Peter Larkin. Alongside these thanks we never forget the amazing Musical Directors and choir accompanists without whom concerts simply wouldn’t happen. Our own treasured MD Marion Maxey and accompanist Richard Stannard. LMVC’s MD, Chris Hill with accompanist Becky Norton and Radcliffe’s MD, Dr Michael Bonshor and the choir accompanist Eleonara Babitsky.

Finally, our special thanks go to RMVC’s Concert Secretary, Mike Bull who had the nightmare of organising the tour.

The now Annual Tour is a vital part of enjoying being part of the Choir. Soloist William Swinnerton’s voice soared magically in Ave Maria and Lucy Sumner was captivating with I Put A Spell on You.

Romsey Male Voice Choir, led by musical director Marion Maxey, also had people swaying to the South Pacific rhythm of Pokarekare Ana. They chose a less traditional selection of songs for the evening which featured well known songs from the shows, favourites from Paul Simon and the Hollies and finished with Impossible Dream, from Man of La Mancha. David Grey, also one of the organising committee, sang the solo part in the Working Man.

All the performers joined together for the finale of Somewhere from West Side Story.’

RMVC Chairman Peter Ashby thanked David and Jackie and the Committee “It was a real joy to perform to a full audience in the Church and to sing with such a talented young choir from Rookwood School. The amount raised for the two charities is testament to the hard work put in by the Committee, as well as the fantastic generosity of sponsors and the audience. The combination of music and worthy causes is our foundation and it’s great when it works as well as it did at St Mary’s
Wed, 24 Oct 2018 00:00:00 +0000 A great night of Magical Music https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/kidderminster-concert-piam-brown-cheque-presentation https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/kidderminster-concert-piam-brown-cheque-presentation
It was the first time we had joined forces with the Kidderminster Male Choir and the combination didn’t disappoint. Once more we were in the responsive setting of the Chandlers Ford Methodist Church and once more we raised the roof with a strong and varied programme of music ranging from the traditional to well-known fun pieces and favourites from the shows. The evening concluded with a very male voice choir joint number, a truly emotional arrangement of ‘Gwahoddiad’.

As well as our first aim to entertain the receptive audience, the concert was staged to support a very worthy cause in the Piam Brown Ward Fund of the Southampton Children’s Hospital Charity. Donations to the ward help to provide the crucial ‘extras’ for children with cancer, and their parents and carers, that the NHS is unable to afford. So, we are delighted to report that, through the generosity of our audience, £1800 was raised on the night and the accompanying photo shows Concert Secretary Mike Bull, together with RMVC Treasurer Andrew Fleming, handing over the ‘substantial cheque’ to Rachel Funnell, co-ordinator of the Charity, at the hospital.

Concert organiser Mike Bull was pleased both with the concert and the sum raised “It’s always good to sing with choirs we haven’t performed with before. Unfortunately, I was away for the event itself, but choir members told me on my return that it was a great success and the Afterglow at a local hostelry, where everyone got to know the Kidderminster choristers better, was reputedly one of the best, involving (as ever) yet more singing!”

RMVC would like to thank the Kidderminster Choir for coming over from their weekend base in Bournemouth to perform with us. We also thank the Methodist Church for its hospitality, the wives and partners of choir members for their support and Vice-Chairman Jim Philbin for taking over the organising reins on the night making sure that everything ran smoothly.
Tue, 27 Nov 2018 00:00:00 +0000 We always love bringing Generations together! https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/we-always-love-bringing-generations-together https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/we-always-love-bringing-generations-together
The Generations Concerts have become a biannual highlight for the Choir, and yes, we really do love bringing singers and musicians of all ages together in our favourite venue, Romsey Abbey. The nearly 200 performers, with a remarkable age range from 7 years old to 87, certainly did do us proud in front of a full audience enthusiastically showing its appreciation for every one of the schools taking part and for RMVC itself. This year on stage with us were Richard Taunton’s 6th Form College; Cantare! From the Romsey School; Romsey Abbey C of E Primary School; The Barton Peveril Soul Session Orchestra, and last but not least, The Mountbatten School Boys Choir. As varied as the ages of the performers were the musical pieces chosen by the six groups including songs from the shows, rock, pop and traditional, the whole concluding in a grand finale with the entire cast giving of their best in The Freedom Song specially arranged by our own Deputy MD Richard Stannard.

Joining the audience in the Abbey were Romsey & Southampton North MP Caroline Nokes and the Mayor of Test Valley Councillor Ian Carr. After the event the Mayor reflected that “It was a privilege to attend and listen to the superb music by everyone involved young and old”. His sentiment was echoed by Romsey Young Carers Trustee Wendy Morrish “What a splendid evening. It worked so well on so many levels. The generations aspect was amazing and the performances delightful.” Feedback from the participating schools was also extremely positive and reinforced RMVC’s belief in the value of helping to nurture a love of music and performing amongst young people.

Of course, most of RMVCs concerts are in aid of worthy charities and as noted this one was no exception. Once more we decided to support Romsey Young Carers and to that end Alan Willsher, together with the charity, produced a moving video featuring one family of four helped by RYC. Follow this link to view the video and learn about Sarah, Paul, Sam and Luke’s story. https://www.dropbox.com/s/f90hdx2iuvhyu8p/GENERATIONS FINALE VIDEO.mp4?dl=0 We still don’t know exactly how much was raised for RYC, but we do know it was some thousands of pounds, which by any standards is an incredible result.

RMVC Chairman Peter Ashby thanked all concerned. In particular Principal Sponsors, The Royston Group, together with the other generous sponsors; concert organisers Alan WIllsher and Ray Pickering; the wonderful Marion Maxey and Brian Budden, and still going strong after 100 notches on his compere’s belt, Terry Morrison. Never to be forgotten, Peter also thanked the wives and partners of choir members who did so much before, during and after the concert, and he gave a special thank you to Gill Gardiner, who in the Afterglow arranged a veritable feast for hungry choristers. Finally, as always RMVC is grateful to Romsey Abbey for being such a friendly and accommodating venue.
Mon, 03 Dec 2018 00:00:00 +0000 It had all the ingredients of a fun Xmas party https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/it-had-all-the-ingredients-of-a-fun-xmas-party https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/it-had-all-the-ingredients-of-a-fun-xmas-party
Great company, good food, talented entertainers, Christmas carols and the odd glass or two to wash it all down. Our party planners extraordinaire Kevin Cleary and George Andreae did us proud……..

It may have been cold and damp outside, but inside Romsey Golf Club RMVC members, wives, partners and friends as ever took no time to warm up. Social Secretary Kevin together with ace swimmer, and long-time RMVC worker, George Andreae, had everything arranged to ensure a successful evening and successful it certainly was.

As always the Golf Club managed the dinner service with efficiency and a smile, so once appetites were satiated the eclectic, and often amusing entertainment began. To find one surprising talent amongst the assembled company was a happy event, to find five a huge bonus. It would be indelicate to pick out any one of these performers for particular applause, but perhaps on this occasion we must mention the fact that one of the talents lay in Treasurer Andrew Fleming’s wife Fay. Singing ‘An Ode to the Maxies’ her cleverly written and beautifully performed Ode drew a well-deserved standing ovation, and to cap it all it was the first time the Boys relinquished the stage at the Christmas party to one of their ladies.

However, we must mention our other acts, whose entertainment value was no less ‘entertaining’. Kevin held the reins of compere nobly filling in gaps with his two poems Santa’s Secret and The Scottish Trip. Romsey Voices gave us two Christmas songs, while Deputy Chairman Jim Philbin, looking a little like an excited monk in a most becoming hat, sang Reviewing the Situation. On a more serious note Clive Matthews and Kevin moved us in their duet Myvanwy, before Mick Summerhayes strung us all along with a little magic. Finally, President Keith, with team Robert Le Grice, Clive Matthews, Ron Taplin and Stan Farrell, performed a slightly irreverent (and short) version of Cinderella. Robert, we will never see you again in the same light ‘allwight?’

No Choir Christmas party is complete without everyone joining together in song. This year Christmas carols followed by an RMVC tradition The Twelve Days of Christmas – a boisterous rendition galvanising each table of party-goers to leap up and down to belt out ‘five gold rings’ or whichever day they were assigned to sing. Cinders had almost lost her shoe when the party slowed to its end and the drift towards the car park began.

Afterwards Deputy Chairman Jim Philbin paid tribute to Kevin and George. “When you are the grateful recipient of other peoples efforts, they make it look easy, but I know Kevin and George worked long and hard to give us all a great evening. I certainly thank them for that and I am sure everyone else attending would add their thanks as well.”
Tue, 18 Dec 2018 00:00:00 +0000 Santa came early to Romsey Young Carers https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/santa-came-early-to-romsey-young-carers https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/santa-came-early-to-romsey-young-carers
Our surprise visit to Romsey Young Carers Christmas party was met with an enthusiastic welcome from an excited group of young carers and their parents when Alan Willsher and Ray Pickering presented the charity with a grand total of £7280 to help it in its work supporting families. The money, raised by RMVC through the Choir’s recent Generations Concert was boosted with sponsorship from Principal Sponsor, The Royston Group, match-funding of the raffle and refreshments by Santander and the generosity of a full audience.

Keren Ben-Dor, RYC’s Schools & Clubs Co-ordinator, was delighted. “RMVC have given us amazing support more than once, but we never imagined the Generations Concert would raise such a brilliant amount. However, though we only had 12 competition minutes to perform our three songs we were determined to do well, and there’s no doubt we did! After singing our first public performance of Walking arranged by Mark Sirett, then two choir favourites, the amusingly choreographed What Shall We Do With The Drunken Sailor and the powerful Bui Doi from Miss Saigon, the competition judges awarded us a very creditable third place, £250 and our second-ever competition trophy. Yes, we were pipped at the post for second place by just one point, but the Gentlemen Songsters, who so narrowly beat us, were great contestants and a great choir as was the overall winner, the Imperial Male Voice Choir.

We definitely did ourselves proud, and along with the first and second place choirs, our other reward was to showcase our talents in front of a 1000 strong audience at the Gala Charity Choral Concert held at the Lighthouse that evening. Each Choir was asked to perform its competition pieces again, however since Bui Doi had been part of the Gentlemen Songsters competition entry, RMVC was forced to make a last-minute song substitution, choosing Bring Him Home from Les Miserables.

All 10 Choirs massed for 6 numbers spread throughout the evening and together ended the Concert with American Trilogy and Gwahoddiad.

It was a long day for us all, but the adrenalin flowed, we kept up the pace and felt good about what we had achieved. So very well done to our wonderful MD Marion, our equally wonderful accompanist Brian and to all our great choir members. Onward and upward to success at our next competition in Cornwall.”

The next day Marion Maxey emailed her thoughts saying “I was so proud of the choir for performing as well as they have. We showed the judges just what we can do. And 2nd/3rd places were split by the narrowest possible margin so I’m just proud to be the Musical Director of Romsey MVC.

And we’re proud to have you Marion.

Tue, 30 Apr 2019 00:00:00 +0000 A Winning Combination of Competition, Camaraderie and Character – that was Cornwall 2019 https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/a-winning-combination-of-competition-camaraderie-and-character-that-was-cornwall-2019 https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/a-winning-combination-of-competition-camaraderie-and-character-that-was-cornwall-2019
The Competition

When you are competing against some of the best male choirs as we were in the Cornwall International Male Choir Choral Competition (including some professional choirs) you really do have to do your preparation well. So we were delighted the extra rehearsal time, with Marion energetically spurring us on, proved worthwhile, and there’s no doubt it paid dividends.

Before our competition performance in Truro Cathedral we felt the heady mixture of nerves, excitement and trepidation, but in the end each one of us gave of our best and RMVC was awarded 5th place in its class by the panel of expert adjudicators. Not a bad result given the standard of the competitors, and we were definitely bolstered by many unsolicited compliments on our singing from audience members and other competing choirs.

For those interested, first place in the competition class was given to the Munta Musikanter MM MVC from Finland. YouTube videos of all the competing choirs can be found online.

And then there was more…….

The actual competition was the tough bit of the tour, next came our chance to sing in two very different venues. For the first we travelled to St Just to the Methodist Church, and whilst we don’t like to boast, our programme there, especially our last-minute rendition of Bui Doi from Miss Saigon, achieved a lengthy standing ovation. The day afterwards we were treated to the chance to be part of the Festival’s entertainment in Cornwall’s famous Eden Project, and once again we were pleased to note that our performance went down well with the crowd.

The three days of the Festival offered RMVC a very different experience, but it was a self-affirming, musically challenging and rewarding experience with a large dose of fun in a near perfect setting.

The Camaraderie & Character

Not everything was about singing. We did have some time together or individually to explore the beautiful Cornish Coast and countryside, St Michael’s Mount, Lands End and Penzance and we didn’t let the blustery wind and ‘occasional’ thundery showers in any way dampen our spirits.

However, much of the Choir togetherness came about in the evenings when hair was let down over and after dinner. Marion said we shouldn’t, but of course we did. Voices were once more raised in song as were those of the Bristol MVC who had chosen to stay in the same hotel; so choral forces were joined and a new MVC friendship made. It must be remarked that oiling the wheels of the laughter and evening enjoyment was the generous gift by the hotel of four free drinks for each guest – well it would have been rude not to fully take up the offer!

Thanks

The organisation of the Festival was first-class, so our grateful thanks must go to everyone who made it possible and in particular to the Festival Artistic Director Gareth Churcher.

From RMVC’s perspective our Concert Secretary, Mike Bull did a tremendous and not easy job making (and sometimes re-making) the detailed arrangements for the Tour – thank you Mike for all your efforts. MD Marion Maxey as always could not have put more into getting us ready and into conducting during performances. She most certainly is RMVC’s own star, and Brian Budden thank you for stepping in at the last minute in difficult travel circumstances to accompany us – it was very much appreciated.

Finally, we should all pat ourselves on the back for our part in an extremely successful annual tour.
Thu, 16 May 2019 00:00:00 +0000 A Summer boost for Romsey's Foodbank https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/a-summer-boost-for-romseys-foodbank https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/a-summer-boost-for-romseys-foodbank
Romsey Male Voice Choir demonstrated its ongoing support for the Romsey Foodbank when the Choir’s Social Secretary, Kevin Cleary presented Jo Topley the Foodbank Co-ordinator with cheques totalling £500. The evening marked the third time the Military Wives accepted RMVC’s invitation to join forces in a concert and on each occasion the wonderful harmony between the two choirs has grown more and more apparent.

This harmony was never more evident than in the opening joint performance of Let the River Run by Carly Simon and in the subsequent joint numbers, You’ll Never Walk Alone and the lovely, emotional song Somewhere from West Side Story.

Each choir sang their own very varied pieces during the concert, with RMVC showing its linguistic versatility in Welsh, Russian and Maori as well as including notable solos from Keith Lawrenson, Geoff Skinner, Jim Philbin, Clive Matthews and Martin Cullum, and once more performing just a little (not too difficult) choreography.

For their chosen musical pieces, the Military Wives were in fabulous voice and who couldn’t feel moved by the choristers’ rendition of Danny Boy and the Songs that Won the War. Like RMVC they too showcased choir soloists including the wonderful Hannah Sandu demonstrating her musical versatility, in matching talents as an accompanist with an amazing singing voice.

Both Choirs were as ever keen to support charity through the concert and on this occasion the aim was to raise as much money as possible for Help for Heroes. To support this aim HfH Ambassador and forces veteran Rob Shenton took to the stage to share his life changing, moving and in so many ways positive personal story. This illustrated as nothing else could the difference an individual’s determination to recover, coupled with the support of Help for Heroes, can make to those whose lives will never be the same due to PTSD or injury. Thank you Rob for helping us all to understand this so much better.

We will let everyone know how much was raised for HfH on the night in the near future.

For RMVC it was also special to have two of the Choir’s Patrons present in the Abbey; the Honourable Alexandra Knatchbull and Dr Haydn James, both joined by Romsey Mayor, Councillor Janet Burnage, Test Valley Mayor, Councillor Martin Hatley and our long-time supporter Romsey and Southampton North MP Caroline Nokes.

We can never conclude without saying a huge thanks to the two Musical Directors, our own Marion Maxey and SPMWC’s Susan Raeburn – we can’t do it without you! Neither can we do it without the talented accompanists, RMVC’s Richard Stannard and the Military Wives Hannah Sandu. Thanks to them and thanks also to Concert Compère Terry Morrison – another great job Terry. Finally, our gratitude goes out to the Abbey itself, to Mike Bull, our Concert Secretary, and the wives and partners of choir members who always do so much to make concerts run smoothly.

PS The Afterglow in the Phoenix Pub in Romsey was pretty good as well so thanks to the staff there for the welcome and the food.
Wed, 16 Oct 2019 00:00:00 +0000 The New Kevin & Clive Duo https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/the-new-kevin-clive-duo https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/the-new-kevin-clive-duo
RMVC has been fortunate in having excellent Chairs and Deputy Chairs over the years and most give more than one year to the role. For the past two years Peter Ashby has held the reins as Chairman and has done a sterling job in keeping RMVC on track as has his worthy and hardworking Deputy Jim Philbin who has also stepped down.

However, 2019 sees both a new Chairman in Kevin Cleary and a new Deputy in long-standing choir member Clive Matthews. Kevin has been choir Marshall for some time and recently gained another job as RMVC’s Social Secretary. When asked if he intended to carry on in these roles alongside becoming Chairman, he was phlegmatic. “I certainly hope so, but we will see. It’s hard stepping into a previous chairman’s shoes. I do have lots of ideas, but I’m very conscious that to bring any of them to fruition means taking choir members with me and being prepared to change direction and my thinking when needed. Being part of RMVC is great musically. We have a brilliant Musical Director and accompanists and fellow choristers are so good to work with on new music and old favourites, but I believe our motto ‘Singing fun taken seriously’ means we should also have fun, so to me the social side of the choir is very important which is why I would like to keep going as Social Secretary.

As for my deputy and friend Clive, I think he is well aware that he may well do the lions share of the work in his joint roles of Deputy and Chairman of our Music Committee – as many will know the latter is not a minor job in a Choir. I am looking forward to the two of us working closely together and I know we are both fully committed to doing our very best to take the choir forward positively and harmoniously. So, thanks Boys for giving me this opportunity and be assured my door is open to anyone with suggestions about anything to do with RMVC.”

Never short of ideas himself Clive added “I agree with Kevin” and “I think we’ll make a great team – just watch this space but please lay off the jokes about the Welsh Taffia.”
Wed, 06 Nov 2019 00:00:00 +0000 £3000 for Help for Heroes https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/3000-for-help-for-heroes https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/3000-for-help-for-heroes
Yes, once again our great choristers together with our generous audience made a difference. Sated and replete, 12 days on our feet, it’s how we open Christmas and it’s such a treat….. Yes well perhaps we’ll leave the rest of the ruination of a Les Mis classic to others’ imaginations; suffice however to say that Chairman Kevin with (we suspect) his ‘often-behind-the-scenes’ wife Lesley did a grand job in organising yet another memorable RMVC Christmas evening.

As always, the staff at the Romsey Golf Club did us proud in producing an excellent meal served with efficiency and good humour. The ambiance in the room spoke volumes for a shared sense of enjoyment, fun and the odd glass of something to lift the spirits, and then there was the entertainment!

Five soloists, two comedy acts and the Snow White Panto – a veritable RMVC Variety Show. Needless to say, all performances were top notch, enthusiastically received, and like last year some more unexpected talents came to the fore. Most notably on this occasion David and Jackie Grey’s excellently executed comedic rendering of J. Milton Hayes poem The Green Eye of the Yellow God and Dave Witt, Martin Cullum & Clive Tunley’s specially written version of the old Frost Report ‘Class Sketch’.

For those who know the Choir, the soloists were Kevin in tandem with Elise Witt; George Andreae (soon to return to the Choir); RMVC newcomer David Hanks and longer-standing choir member Mike Butler. The panto starred Terry Morrison as the Narrator; Keith Lawrenson as Snow White; Martin Combes as ALL the dwarfs (due to cutbacks); Stan Farrell as the Wicked Queen; Clive Matthews as the Prince and finally Robert Le Grice as the Mirror. It’s just left to say grateful thanks to all our great entertainers, not forgetting of course Brian Budden on piano whose gift in playing both and without music never ceases to amaze.

So that’s the 2019 RMVC Christmas party in a nutshell and it’s now onwards to Romsey’s annual Carols in the Square preceded by RMVC’s tradition of ‘Bells at Bells’ (courtesy of Bells Solicitors) on the 23rd December.
Thu, 12 Dec 2019 00:00:00 +0000 A Welcome Boost for the Food Bank https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/a-welcome-boost-for-the-food-bank https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/a-welcome-boost-for-the-food-bank
Romsey Male Voice Choir boosted the funds of the Romsey Food Bank with a cheque for £667 presented by RMVC Chairman Kevin Cleary to Food Bank Manager Jo Topley and her Volunteers. However, musical scores steered clear of archives, computers and iPads were energised and the wonders of Zoom came to the rescue. It wasn’t the same, but we could sing with Marion taking the lead, we could talk to each other, and we did have some quizzes along the way.

SO……now we can finally get back to singing the way we do best, relieved, and very grateful that all of our choir members have managed to come through this difficult time without getting Covid.
Tue, 13 Jul 2021 00:00:00 +0000 WE’RE BACK, WE WERE LIVE AND WE LOVED IT! https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/were-back-we-were-live-and-we-loved-it https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/were-back-we-were-live-and-we-loved-it
RMVC was back where it loves to be in Romsey Abbey in front of a live audience singing once more in the company of fellow choir members and it was wonderful ……

After a long 18 months of Zooming our way to maintaining music and voice memory, choir members were finally able to meet and catch-up face to face in just a few Covid careful rehearsals in preparation for taking the stage in the Abbey as part of the Romsey Festival.

The excitement on the night was high, the emotion palpable, and despite the need to stand socially distanced, many of those listening assured us that we had not ‘lost it’ in the pandemic, in fact with the amazing acoustics in the Abbey they told us the sound we made was every bit as good as ever. Such a relief and testament to the commitment of all choir members and the musical leadership of Marion Maxey our fantastic Musical Director. The programme of songs chosen, including Bui Doi from Miss Saigon and the Maori love song Pokarekare Ana, reflected some of the favourites of Choir members, as well as showcasing new pieces, and solos were on the menu by Keith Lawrenson, David Grey, Jim Philbin and Clive Matthews.

Adding to the ambiance of the evening we were also delighted to welcome our two guest soloists. In the first half of the programme musically talented tenor Byron Horne from the Romsey Youth Choir sang an old favourite A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square, along with two other set pieces. In the second half the supremely gifted Viola player Rachel Maxey captivated the audience with her memorable performances of Moonlight Sonata and Gigue from cello suite no.3 in C major - Bach. Both also joined with RMVC for the finale arrangement of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ from Carousel.

Choir Chairman Kevin Cleary was delighted with the whole evening. “To pull off a concert in the Abbey after an enforced 18-month rest and a very few weeks since we were actually able to sing together in my view was remarkable. Of course, it couldn’t have happened without Marion’s drive and leadership, but as well we are so fortunate in having Richard Stannard’s incredibly accomplished accompaniment to both the Choir and the soloists. And then none of this would have been possible without the behind-the-scenes hard work of Mike Bull, our Concert Secretary along with the Choir Committee. Finally, a concert is nothing without an audience, so thank you to everyone who came along and made us feel both wanted and special – you are great!”

All photographs are courtesy of Romsey Viewfinders. Thank you to Andrew Greenwood & Philip Clewer photographers.
Tue, 13 Jul 2021 00:00:00 +0000 With just three days’ notice Romsey Voices came to the rescue https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/urc-concert-2021 https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/urc-concert-2021
We were all set to welcome Notability from Manchester to Romsey to sing with us at our concert in the Abbey United Reformed Church when once again Covid struck. No doubt Notability’s coach was booked and its choristers all rehearsed and ready to go when sadly, just three days before they were due to travel, several of the choir’s members tested positive for Covid and the visit had to be cancelled. What were we to do? There was no way we wanted to disappoint those who’d bought tickets to the concert, we certainly didn’t want to countenance curtailing the evening’s entertainment, but it did leave us with a hole in the programme and a big problem……

Ever resourceful, our Chairman and Committee approached Romsey Voices to see whether they would be prepared and able to step into the breach in place of Notability. To our delight and relief, despite only having three days’ notice to gather up their song sheets and get ready to perform, the Choir said yes. We would like to place on record our gratitude to every one of them, and our thanks also to Marion for directing and conducting both choirs throughout the whole of the evening. Marion also kindly arranged for 15-year-old Anna Loadman, a talented flautist, to take a solo slot in both halves of the concert, a lovely performance much appreciated by the audience on the night.

So finally, RMVC had the kind of concert we love, a concert showcasing a varied and as always eclectic programme of music. But what did we sing? RMVC challenged itself by singing in three languages Russian, Maori and Welsh as well as introducing new pieces (in English!) including Portrait of my Love and Anthem from ‘Chess’. Our most rousing piece, and an audience favourite, was Bui Doi from Miss Saigon. The joint finale was You Raise Me Up by Graham and Lovland and arranged by Emerson.

Finally, it is important to note that as always an RMVC concert is in aid of charity and once more the chosen charity was The Romsey Foodbank. RMVC members have been keen to support those who need help in this way, and even during the period of lockdown, the Choir donated nearly £1000 to the Foodbank. So, we are pleased to announce that a further £1000 was raised for this vital cause through the concert. Our grateful thanks to all who donated.
Wed, 24 Nov 2021 00:00:00 +0000 It was a Standing Ovation for Generations https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/it-was-a-standing-ovation-for-generations https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/it-was-a-standing-ovation-for-generations
For the 5th time it seems RMVC’s formula of bringing together different Generations to sing proved once more to be a winner. The wonderful audience reaction throughout the concert staged in November was a huge tonic for all the performers and once again music worked its emotional, spiritual, and joyous magic in the beautiful setting of Romsey Abbey.

If anyone had any doubts about the musical talent within Romsey schools, then the Generations concert could only dispel them. From the charming, animated, and extremely together performances of the Romsey Abbey Primary School Choir, to the amazing big sound, big talents of the Mountabatten Big Band and the equally talented Romsey School Single Reed Ensemble it was very clear that the love of music means so much to the young. And, not quite so young, we were treated to the moving and haunting voices of Romsey Youth Chamber Choir with clear notes rising high, high up into the nave before falling again to caress the audience. Finally, Romsey Male Voice Choir. Well, we love to sing and thankfully our performance on the night we’ve been assured did us credit, and if anything makes ‘the boys’ happy it’s having a happy audience.

It must be noted that it was the finale ‘You Raise Me Up’ which literally raised the audience to its feet. The Primary School Choir, largely unseen from their seats at the side of the Abbey, joined RMVC and the Youth Choir, all led by Marion, singing enthusiastically, just as they had enthusiastically danced in the aisles to the music of the Big Band. Wonderful!

Our thanks as always go to RMVC’s Musical Director, Marion Maxey, who also directed the Romsey Abbey Primary School and Romsey Youth Chamber Choir. To Stu Marchant the Big Band conductor and Director of Music at Mountbatten School and to Megan Jefferis who conducted the Romsey School Single Reed Ensemble. We also thank Richard Stannard, RMVC’s accompanist and Chris Maxey who accompanied the Primary School and Youth Choirs. And then, of course, our best thanks of all goes to the young people who entertained us so royally, and we hope each and every one of them will take their love of music with them in their life journeys.

Finally, the Abbey Staff were great; our ladies support group was as ever great, and Mike Bull RMVC’s concert secretary deserves thanks for organising this year’s Generations Concert.

Wed, 15 Dec 2021 00:00:00 +0000 IT WAS UPLIFTING, FUN AND WE DEFINITELY HAD ONE OF OUR BEST AUDIENCES YET! https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/it-was-uplifting-fun-and-we-definitely-had-one-of-our-best-audiences-yet https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/it-was-uplifting-fun-and-we-definitely-had-one-of-our-best-audiences-yet
When Springhill Catholic Primary School, with its 684 pupils, invited RMVC to sing as part of the School’s celebrations of St David’s Day we weren’t quite sure what to expect, but we absolutely loved what we got during an uplifting afternoon of song. 25 of us, red-shirted, with Richard Stannard taking the conductors chair and Brian Budden on the piano, warmed up in the modern hall with no chairs waiting for our ‘little’ audience. In reality, the first children who filed into the hall to sit expectant and cross-legged were indeed to our eyes very young and very little, but in numbers they most certainly were not.

We’d been told in advance we would be singing to separate groups of children from the foundation year through to year 6, in mini-concerts, and our aim was to feature specially chosen music for each group. We included fun songs with animation (and some dressing up), songs from the shows, and a Welsh piece, O Gymru, which we sang in Welsh in honour of St David’s Day. The latter wonderfully with the children’s participation, again in Welsh.

RMVC’s Concert Secretary and compère Mike Bull said “I’m not sure who enjoyed the afternoon more the children or the choristers. For all of us it was a delightful and entertaining afternoon. The children could not have been better behaved, more attentive and more appreciative. From the start they clapped enthusiastically, gave us great smiles, moved to the rhythms of the music, and touched the hearts of all our singers. What a wonderful tribute they are to Springhill School its teachers and its values. It’s not something the choir has done before but who knows we might do it again! So thank you Springhill for inviting us.
Wed, 16 Mar 2022 00:00:00 +0000 It was three great days of singing, singing and yet more singing – just what RMVC does best! https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/it-was-three-great-days-of-singing-singing-and-yet-more-singing-just-what-rmvc-does-best https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/it-was-three-great-days-of-singing-singing-and-yet-more-singing-just-what-rmvc-does-best
Once more this year we joined with 50 other choirs in the Cornwall International Male Choral festival to take part in a celebration of musical competitions and concerts. Billeted in an excellent hotel overlooking the beautiful beach and cliff area in Newquay, on Friday night after a good, convivial supper Choir members nursed their nerves, expectations and hopes before the following morning taking the short trip south to Truro to get set to compete.

THE COMPETITION

Arriving at Truro Cathedral, the competition venue, RMVC was placed in a category of 40 or fewer choir members competing against 12 other international and UK choirs. Each choir had 12 minutes and no more to sing their chosen pieces. For RMVC these were The Seal Lullaby, The Morning Trumpet, and O Gymru all lovely, but technically challenging. Later we were told the choir performed them well, and later still the competition adjudicators praised RMVC and other choirs for this year’s extremely high standard of performances. HOWEVER, in case you are wondering, no we didn’t win, though we were satisfactorily placed. Against us in the competition were two excellent international choral choirs, ffortissibros and Vocal Ensemble Man(n) Singt whose fantastic, trained voices worked their magic on the adjudicators giving them well-deserved first and second places in our category. So maybe with more professional talent taking the lead we didn’t need to be disappointed!

THE NEXT DAY CONCERTS

In the rain

On Saturday the weather was glorious: on Sunday it rained, and it was on Sunday morning that we were due to sing in the open air above the beach at Killacourt in Newquay….umm Before us on stage was Hampshire Police MVC and we were set to join them for a joint rendering of an old favourite American Trilogy. The umms and ahhs over breakfast, would the concert be called off or not continued until the last minute before we were due take a damp walk to Killacourt. We went; we sang with the Police choir; we then sang three pieces on our own and we all got very wet, as did our stalwart audience and the one vocal dog!

That evening

We dried off over a splendid roast lunch at the hotel, then rested until the time to depart for our final concert in the Methodist Church in Porthleven. Here there was a line-up of five choirs including the aforementioned Vocal Ensemble Man(n) Singt performing alongside the more traditional MVCs all of whom were very well recieved. BUT forgive us for blowing our own trumpet. Amongst the pieces RMVC sang, and sang especially well, was one called Prayer of the Children. This exquisitely, emotional piece written in the words of children suffering through war was so extremely poignant in today’s world that amongst our choir members and the audience many wept. Our performance of the other songs, including another audience favourite, Bui Doi, saw us finish our set with a standing ovation from the audience and very welcome praise for our singing from the competition runners up, the Vocal Ensemble Man(n) Singt.

WHAT ELSE?

Without going into detail, those who know us, know that down-time is singing time. In the hotel we sang after dinner on Saturday. At Porthleven we shared a most amazing Afterglow with the other choirs at the Porthleven Association Football Club premises where the host choir Kerrier Male Choir laid on a substantial, buffet for the singers and their partners and friends. The singing was raucous, raising the roof and it was just the best experience to complete a great May Day Bank holiday. Thanks Kerrier.

And that’s it for Cornwall 2022.
Wed, 11 May 2022 00:00:00 +0000 Just a taster of what’s great about being part of RMVC https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/just-a-taster-of-whats-great-about-being-part-of-rmvc https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/just-a-taster-of-whats-great-about-being-part-of-rmvc
So, there we were on those lovely warm and sunny Saturday mornings with recruitment leaflets in hand fighting our way through the uncooperative letter boxes of Romsey’s newest estates, including Abbotswood, Oxlease, Kings Chase and Luzborough Green. This initiative marked the start of our drive to recruit new members, and although we knew not whether our leaflets would be successful in in this quest, our feeling was ‘if you don’t try’……..The purpose was to invite those interested to one of two special ‘Taster Session’ rehearsals where potential members could not only get a flavour of what and how we sing, but also get a sense of the feel and culture of the choir.

So what was the result? We were delighted to have 11 men joining us over the two sessions and of course our hope is that they will turn their interest into choir membership.

Ian Bullivant was one of those who came along and he kindly gave us his reflections on the experience….

"The very welcoming and relaxed attitude I've received form Members on these first few ‘Taster Sessions’ speak volumes of the Choir, that attitude immediately and clearly puts a potential new Member in their own comfort zone, it certainly did for me. It soon became apparent that there is a strong feeling of togetherness within and for the Choir, and Marion Maxey in particular - I feel relaxed and delighted that after years of delay I’m about to commit.

As a Romsey resident and admirer of ‘The Choir’ I have always been so impressed with the broad 'range of pieces’ they expertly produce and for me, solid and professional performances - that’s down to leadership and the Members.”

Ian Bullivant (now new RMVC member)
Tue, 24 May 2022 00:00:00 +0000 Our Chairman Kevin meets the new Romsey Mayor and makes a date! https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/our-chairman-kevin-meets-the-new-romsey-mayor-and-makes-a-date https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/our-chairman-kevin-meets-the-new-romsey-mayor-and-makes-a-date
Chairman Kevin Cleary and First Tenor Representative Brian Boulton were honoured to be in attendance when Romsey’s new Mayor Councillor Neil Gwynne was sworn in on the 17th of May this year. It proved as well to be an opportune moment for Kevin to offer invitations to him, and the outgoing Mayors of Romsey and Test Valley, to RMVC’s long-awaited concert with our special guests from Wales, the Treorchy Male Choir, to be held in Romsey Abbey in October.

The RMVC, Treorchy MC concert is a prized event in RMVCs 2022 schedule of concerts, and for those who love male choir singing it is a must, so Kevin is hopeful the date can be slotted into the Mayor’s and the outgoing Mayors' busy calendars, and as always he is grateful for their support.

So watch this space and our concerts page for news on tickets ..... we predict they will go fast....

Tue, 24 May 2022 00:00:00 +0000 It was third time lucky! https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/it-was-third-time-lucky https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/it-was-third-time-lucky
When Manchester based choral choir Notability accepted our invitation to join RMVC in concert none of us imagined that it would take three, and nearly four, attempts to make it happen. Covid thwarted Notability’s chance to travel twice, then, on the third planned occasion, at the very last minute, Marion, our ever-reliable MD, fell at the covid hurdle by testing positive.

Notability was on its way so there was no turning back however, saving the day the Richard and Brian cavalry stepped in and RMVC gave a collective sigh of relief. Richard, as our deputy MD, moved his role from accompanying to conduct, and Brian gave up his rumoured Glastonbury plans to head to the piano. In reality, Brian was aiming for Bognor Regis on a cancelled train, but that’s another story!

So, with Nick Grout compering, the concert got going with RMVC taking the lead performing its first five numbers. Amongst these was arguably the most moving song of the whole concert Prayer of the Children, sung beautifully, and in its lyrics so resonant of the current horrors of the war in Ukraine. Notability followed giving the audience nuanced, superbly harmonious, and seeming perfect performances of their first five songs of the night including Seigi Rachmaninov’s Bogoroditse Devo – from All-Night Vigil. To end the concert first half the two choirs came together to sing Can’t Help Falling in Love.

After the interval Notability changed the tone of its pieces and finished off an entertaining set of a further five songs with a toe-tapping version of Sit Down You’re Rockin’ the Boat from the musical Guys and Dolls. In the second half RMVC also shifted into different genres including amusing the audience with Chattanooga Choo Choo, or as Mike Bull put it ‘the only train of the night’ (referencing the rail strike), before Nick proceeded to build some extremely lively participation within the audience through the Jubilee favourite, Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond. So popular was this that it had to be sung twice!

Finally, the two choirs came together to perform You Raise Me Up by Graham & Loveland.

As always for the choirs an Afterglow was the real finale to the evening with food, a little to wet the whistle and yet more singing.

Our thanks go to…..

Notability for their wonderful performances and tenacity in making the third attempt. Richard Stannard and Brian Budden without whom the concert couldn’t have happened. Marion Maxey for getting us concert ready. Mike Bull for organising the concert more than once! Lesley Cleary and her team for doing a sterling job on the night and providing the Afterglow feast. Our two Mayors for making the time to join us. Romsey Mayor Cllr Neil Gwynne and Eastleigh Mayor Adam Manning.

And finally, RMVC Choir Members – you did well boys!
Tue, 05 Jul 2022 00:00:00 +0000 At the Beggars Fair in the Methodist Church in Romsey our lovely audience was ‘…so good, so good, so good’ https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/at-the-beggars-fair-in-the-methodist-church-in-romsey-our-lovely-audience-was https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/at-the-beggars-fair-in-the-methodist-church-in-romsey-our-lovely-audience-was
At 12.45pm it was RMVC’s slot in the Beggars Fair programme with us all set to perform some of our favourite songs for just some of the hundreds of people enjoying the wonderful weather and fantastic music staged in venues all over Romsey.

If we’d had concerns that the church lying towards the edge of town might be less likely to attract a full audience those concerns were quickly quelled as seats filled leaving standing room only. The brilliant reception we received after our first high volume number Let the River Run set the scene for the rest of our pieces with us greatly enjoying the experience alongside, and in harmony with the audience. Enjoyment for all, that is apart from one exception spotted. A very young boy, clearly less happy, bucked the trend lying recumbent, face-down on the floor, with his hands held firmly over his ears.

Well you can’t win ‘em all!

For those who want to know what we sang, our line-up of music, included amongst others Bring Him Home from Les Miserable, American Trilogy, Bui Doi from Miss Saigon, an Elvis Presley all-time favourite ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’ and Anthem from the musical Chess. Then it was time for the audience participation with the Jubilee song Sweet Caroline and you guessed it, it was ‘…so good, so good, so good’.

Well done as always to our MD Marion Maxey, to Richard Stannard accompanying and to our President compere Keith Lawrenson.
Mon, 18 Jul 2022 00:00:00 +0000 FROM THE HEART OF WALES TO THE HEARTS OF ROMSEY https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/from-the-heart-of-wales-to-the-hearts-of-romsey https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/from-the-heart-of-wales-to-the-hearts-of-romsey
Getting Going

It was our Chairman Kevin Cleary who, on one of his many trips to Wales, caught up with the Treorchy Male Choir and fulfilled an ambition to invite the choir to sing in Romsey Abbey with RMVC.

It took a bit of planning by Committee members Mike Bull and Alan Willsher working with Music Committee Chair Nick Grout and MD Marion Maxey, but finally on a warm Saturday at the start of October the Treorchy coach pulled up outside the Abbey and something special began to come to life. We knew ticket sales for the concert had gone well but hadn’t quite realised that the view from where the Choir, standing upright and ready, was of an Abbey almost entirely full of an expectant audience. Alan Willsher as Compère welcomed our VIPs, the Test Valley and Romsey Mayors, the generous concert Sponsors, our MP Caroline Noakes and RMVC Patron Haydn James. Then, setting a light, humorous tone, he finally introduced RMVC to get the concert underway.

Concert Highlights

Though we may be biased, the performances of all 18 musical pieces sung throughout the concert were excellently conducted, executed and well received. However, in the first half it would be remiss of us not to mention RMVC’s final number, O Gymru - meaning ‘From Wales’. A beautiful and rousing song in Welsh within which the solo was performed superbly well by RMVC choir member Dai Venn, sadly giving his last appearance with the choir before moving away from Hampshire.

This was followed by Treorchy Male Choir taking to the stage. Another humourist, Gareth Evans, acted as their Compère, amusing the audience with light jokes as well as making note (perhaps not for the first time) of the fact that Treorchy is the only village named after a choir! Treorchy’s four pieces began with Builth, again sung in Welsh, and concluded with a wonderfully powerful version of Men of Harlech, where the choristers’ voices almost literally raised the roof of the Abbey.

Highlights in the second half were Treorchy singing a South African anti-apartheid folk song Senzenina, RMVC a Maori lullaby Hine e Hine, and in a first for RMVC in the Abbey, an audience participation version of the recent Jubilee favourite Sweet Caroline, sung not once but twice! And then who could not find RMVC’s final piece, Bui Doi from Miss Saigon, sung with so much passion, immensely moving.

The Concert Finale brought both choirs on stage to perform three pieces together. Anthem from the Musical Chess, arranged and conducted by Haydn James, Morte Criste, and as an encore Gwahoddiad. Lastly, the choirs led the audience in singing Land of My Fathers and God Save Our Gracious King.

Definitely, and not to be forgotten, the last, and perhaps most lingering, concert highlight for both choirs was the fantastic, long, standing ovation from the best audience.

Prostate Cancer UK

Apart from entertainment, the other major aim of the concert, was to raise as much money as possible for an extremely worthy cause and one close to the hearts of many men within the choirs and probably the audience, Prostate Cancer UK. We were fortunate on the night to have Micky Chilman recounting his story of suffering and recovering from the disease before he became an active supporter of, and volunteer for, the Charity. His words brought into sharp focus the importance of the work of Prostate Cancer UK and so we are extremely grateful to Micky for taking the time to join us to pay his tribute.

The Afterglow

Was there ever one like it? Orchestrated by Honorary Choir Member Ray Pickering and the Choir Chairman’s wife Lesley Cleary, the Afterglow in Romsey’s Crossfield Hall was a triumph of careful planning, great food, plenty to wet thirsty whistles, and the two choirs forging bonds through great social interaction and yet more singing. Well done Ray and Lesley for all your hard work – it was much appreciated.

Thanks

To our Concert Sponsors:

The Brightbeech Group: Michael Rhodes Estate Agents: Paultons Park:

Rathbones Investment Management: Romsey Medical Practice: Security Supplies Ltd.

For Financial Support from:

Hampshire County Council: Test Valley Borough Council: Romsey Town Council

Our gratitude once again to Liz Wagner and all the staff of Romsey Abbey. To everyone at RMVC who made the concert happen. To the RMVC Ladies Support Group, headed by Lesley Cleary – we still really can’t do it without you! Thanks also to the two conductors Stewart Roberts and our own Marion Maxey and the two accompanists Treorchy’s Ryan Wood and RMVC’s Richard Stannard. Last but not least we are grateful to Philip Clewer for his photography.

FINALLY……..Thanks so much Boys for making the trip from Treorchy and for giving us and our audience so much pleasure. Why not read on….

For President Keith it was a kind of homecoming and for those singing in RMVC in 2005 it brought back many happy memories. As Keith explained to the audience at the start of the concert, his love of male voice singing started in Budleigh, so when he left Devon to settle in Hampshire his desire to continue singing was turned into the action needed to bring Romsey Male Voice Choir into being. Back in Budleigh he was particularly touched to greet in the audience Pamela Jones, now BSMVC’s Life President, who was the choir’s Musical Director when Keith was a member.

However, what made the evening, and the concert so special was the very warm welcome RMVC received from the Budleigh Choir and from the appreciative audience in St Peter’s Church. With adrenalin as always working its magic, both choirs rose wonderfully well to the occasion singing an engaging and diverse range of music from the emotional to the rousing to old favourites. RMVC members particularly loved Budleigh’s rendering of the Music of the Night from the Phantom of the Opera, while, in the second half of the programme, RMVC performed the mining song Working Man with Keith Lawrenson singing the solo.

The joint finale saw both Choirs raising voices together in American Trilogy, followed by Anthem from Chess, and lastly Morte Criste, (When I survey the Wondrous Cross) as an encore.

The Afterglow for the choirs at a local hostelry was a triumph of yet more singing and an excellent, very much appreciated buffet. We were only saddened that having to catch the coach home meant most of us couldn’t stay for quite as long as we would have wanted.

Our very grateful thanks to Budleigh Salterton for inviting us to join in concert with them. Particular thanks to BSMVC Musical Director Michael Graham and Accompanist Sandra Jepps, and our own MD Marion Maxey and Accompanist Richard Stannard. Finally, we hope the concert raised much needed funds for ‘Force’ the charity supported on the night.

Oh, and just to say, that long day away was most definitely worth it!
Wed, 26 Oct 2022 00:00:00 +0000 £9000 - WHAT A FANTASTIC OUTCOME! https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/9000-what-a-fantastic-outcome https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/9000-what-a-fantastic-outcome
Finally, we are able to announce the amount raised for Prostate Cancer UK at our concert with Treorchy Male Choir. We are delighted to say that we beat our last record of funds raised for Prostate Cancer UK at a concert in Winchester Cathedral with the wonderful £9000 donation we were able to give to the charity. Once more our thanks must go to all those who made the concert, and this amazing outcome, happen. At a choir rehearsal in the photograph Chairman Kevin and Concert Secretary Mike presented the check to Prostate Cancer UK Ambassador Micky Chilman who warmly thanked RMVC on behalf of the charity.
Wed, 23 Nov 2022 00:00:00 +0000 UNTIL THERE IS PEACE https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/until-there-is-peace https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/until-there-is-peace
We were extremely grateful to the Reverend David Potterton and St Michael & All Angels Church for their generosity in supporting our concert held on 19 November with the aim to raise funds for people living in desperate circumstances in Ukraine. As David explained to a capacity audience, the Church and its community has been extremely active in collecting and delivering crucial supplies to Ukraine for some time and continues its work to do so. He emphasised the importance of sending those things that friends on the ground in Ukraine are telling him are absolutely needed to make the maximum difference examples of which are baby food and tinned and other food supplies for men on the front line.

Of course the other, and important, aim of the concert was to entertain. So RMVC, with friends Romsey Voices and two talented young soloists Lily Visser and Thomas Grewcock from Brockenhurst College, did just that with a programme of music featuring something for everyone. Especially poignant was a piece sung by RMVC called The Prayer of the Children having resonance with the plight of children in Ukraine. We were delighted on the night to have present in the audience Lidiia, Serhii and their son Mykyta, a Ukrainian family hosted in West Wellow by RMVC choir member Mick Summerhayes and his wife Dorte. The family’s story can be read below.

OUR THANKS

Once more to David, the Church and the on the night church volunteers. To our wonderfully appreciative audience without whose help the £2500 raised for this critical cause would not have been achieved.

We thank our Chairman Kevin Cleary and Concert Secretary Mike Bull for organising the concert, and as always our amazing Musical Director Marion Maxey and our equally amazing accompanist Richard Stannard. BUT a concert would not be a concert without the singers. Well done and thank you to Lily and Thomas – we loved your performances. Thanks again to Romsey Voices for joining with us and finally ‘Boys’ thanks to you.

FROM UKRAINE TO WEST WELLOW – Lidiia, Serhii Mykyta’s story

When chorister and retired local GP Mick and his wife Dorte opened their hearts and their home to host Serhii, Lidiia and Mykyta from Ukraine, a wonderful symbiotic relationship was the happy result. Mick tells the story………

“We just wanted to help. We certainly had the space, we definitely had the compassion, but trying to jump Government hurdles to find a family to support was getting us nowhere. Luckily, we also had a friend in Scotland with a Russian husband. Appalled by the events in Ukraine, they started a Hosting Movement to tackle the all-important job of matching families in need to hosts in the UK. On paper, Serhii, whose back injury prohibited him from joining the Ukrainian army, his wife Lidiia and their 16-year-old son Mykyta, with a dream to become a dentist, seemed the perfect match for us, and so it transpired. When finally Dorte and I stood waving our Ukrainian flag at Heathrow to welcome a very tired, suitcase-laden family it was the start of a great, and we anticipate, enduring friendship.

Many people have also opened their hearts to our lovely family since they moved in with us giving both emotional and practical help. The schools, the incredible Freedom Church, our neighbours, including one teaching LIdiia English, our GP and the health service. The list goes on. Serhii, a lorry driver has found work and now delivers car parts across Europe. Lidiia, having once held a professional role in Ukraine, first picked fruit locally and now is employed with a Steel Fabricator in Romsey. Mykyta has had a seamless transition from Mountbatten School to Barton Peveril College. The joy of having them living with us is profound, and as we have helped them to live happily in the UK after leaving their war-ridden homeland, they have given back to us both happiness and practical help in so very many ways.

However, I think the most touching moment came recently when Serhii returned from two long weeks away driving in Europe. As he drew up outside the house and saw us, without prompting and in perfect English he said, “It is so good for me to be back to ‘Home Sweet Home’”.

“Now that really is the best any of us could have asked for.”

Fri, 09 Dec 2022 00:00:00 +0000 It was a great concert to help those affected by the earthquake in Turkey and Syria. https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/it-was-a-great-concert-to-help-those-in-turkey-and-syria-whose-lives-were-devastated-by-the-recent-earthquake. https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/it-was-a-great-concert-to-help-those-in-turkey-and-syria-whose-lives-were-devastated-by-the-recent-earthquake.
RMVC, along with the Romsey Youth Chamber Choir, pulled out all the stops to deliver their best performances in the URC just a week to the day after taking part in the Romsey Mayor’s concert in Romsey Abbey…….

The Concert First Half

The United Reformed Church is a beautiful, acoustically welcoming venue that, despite the relatively short notice before the concert, on the night supported a lively and appreciative audience in its nave and balcony. The RMVC distinctive green jackets took their place standing below the Church’s tall, impressive organ for Chairman Kevin Cleary to introduce the Choir’s first half pieces including old favourites O Gymru in Welsh, Can’t Help Falling in Love and the memorable Bring him Home from Les Misérables. After this it was Romsey Youth Chamber Choir’s turn on stage to sing a series of lilting harmonies, How Can You Catch the Wind, Ubi Caritas, All for the Love of One and finally Wayfaring Stranger.

Then before the interval Marion Maxey, Musical Director of both choirs, introduced special guests Jim and Ross who gave the audience and choirs alike a very poignant, and realistic feel for the voluntary work they had recently been doing in Turkey, and bringing alive their efforts to help save those trapped beneath buildings in the ruins following the devastating earthquake.

The Second Half

Marion led the introductions to the Chamber Choir’s very varied second half performances, Blue Mountain River, Hold Me Rock Me, Lunar Lullaby, Tibie Paiom in Russian and Somewhere Over the Rainbow. RMVC, this time compered by Deputy Chair Jim Philbin, similarly demonstrated its versatility in singing Seize the Day, Unchained Melody, the evocative Prayer of the Children, so resonant of the war in Ukraine, and finally a rousing rendition of Bui Doi from Miss Saigon.

The Finale

We all love a finale where the choirs come together, and this finale did not disappoint. But before revealing what was sung, the audience learned of the birthday of a new RMVC choir member x whose two young chorister daughters joined him at the front of the singers for Happy Birthday to be sung before they remained on stage to sing the Finale choice Let the River Run, from the film Working Girl, a feisty, exuberant number to finish off a fantastic concert.

Thanks

As ever, as always, we thank the tireless and talented Marion Maxey, and also Richard Stannard and Chris Maxey for their amazing piano accompaniment. RMVC’s wonderful Ladies Support Team for all that they do, and of course all the Choristers in both choirs whose singing never fails to be wonderfully entertaining. Lastly, thanks to the URC for the best venue and well done to Jim and Ross.
Mon, 03 Apr 2023 00:00:00 +0000 On Tour Again - Three in One and each One was Great https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/on-tour-again-three-in-one-and-each-one-was-great https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/on-tour-again-three-in-one-and-each-one-was-great
Travelling North to Manchester and back via Lichfield, our 2023 tour was a huge success. What a way to spend a long weekend.

CONCERT ONE WITH NOTABILITY

After a long journey up the motorways the Boys assembled in a welcoming Premier Inn in Prestwich before happily heading off to St Bernadette’s Church up the road to join with old friends Notability for the evening’s concert.

Who on the night could not have been blown away by Notability’s wonderful, harmonious performances of beautiful music that included Eriskay Love Lilt, Blue Moon and Here Comes the Sun – certainly the audience was enraptured. And, if we might say so, RMVC was also on top form singing old favourites such as O Gymru (in Welsh), Bring Him Home and the ever-emotional Bui Doi. Topping it all the final joint number Let the River Run brought the audience to its feet for a standing ovation, and for us, entertaining at our best is what it’s all about!

Then, this great evening was followed by an amazing Afterglow in the nearby Social Club featuring a wonderful spread of much appreciated food, enough (some might say more than enough) glasses of beer or wine, and needless to say more singing.

So….very many thanks Notability for the return invitation, a really lovely concert, and for your fabulous hospitality. All ways around a real treat for the Choir.

CONCERT TWO WITH ROSSENDALE MALE VOICE CHOIR

Isn’t Manchester brilliant? Salford Quays, The Lowry Museum, and a buzzing City Centre all to be enjoyed, but by 4.45pm choir members and partners were once more aboard the coach going a bit further north to Darwen and The Church of the Parish of St Cuthbert with St Stephen to meet up with Rosssendale MVC.

The time given over to rehearsals in between arrival and the concert can be tricky for wives and partners seeking something to do. So entertainment has to be found wherever it can be, and without naming names, some wives could be seen sitting on a wall with what looked suspiciously like wine in plastic cups! Umm…..though the time waiting was well worth it for Rossendale is a very accomplished and fun choir led by it’s animated MD Matthew Thomas.

In more ways than one Rossendale ‘performed’ What Shall We Do With the Drunken Sailor bringing laughter to the audience. They included in their sets Gwahoddiad, Don’t look Back in Anger and the rousing Seize the Day. You Raise Me Up, You’ll Never Walk Alone and the beautiful Prayer of the Children were amongst the songs sung by RMVC, the latter, so resonant of the troubles in Ukraine, was especially appreciated by the audience. Finally, we had the real pleasure of jointly singing two really, really old favourites American Trilogy and Morte Criste. Wonderful!

Sadly we didn’t have as long as we might have liked for the Afterglow in the Church, BUT there’s no doubt the in time we did have our friendship with Rossendale gained immeasurably in strength. Over the whole evening we couldn’t have enjoyed ourselves more, so grateful thanks Rossendale – let’s do it again if we can.

CONCERT THREE IN LICHFIED CATHEDRAL

If you haven’t been there you should go. Lichfield Cathedral is a glorious place to sing. Our short concert, where we sang just eight songs, was free to all, and we had those who stayed throughout to hear us sing as well as people listening in whilst touring the Cathedral. The highlight of the concert however was a piano solo by JR Bach played by our Deputy MD and so talented Accompanist Richard Stannard.

Bursting out of the Cathedral into the hot sunshine the last (and impromptu) song of the tour, Can’t Help Falling In Love was sung to families sitting or standing enjoying the beauty of the grounds.

THANKS

To both Choirs for their excellent organisation of the concerts. Rarely an easy task!

To the brilliant Musical Directors: Mathew Thomas from Rossendale and our own much-loved Marion Maxey. (Notability does not have a conductor)

Accompanists: Lesley Cavanagh from Notability; Liz Baker from Rossendale and of course Richard Stannard accompanying RMVC.

To Mike Bull, who really did have his work cut out getting all the details for the trip in place and making it happen so successfully, and for his poetry in Lichfield Cathedral.

To the patient coach driver Steve.
Tue, 30 May 2023 00:00:00 +0000 It was hot, but it was ‘Jackets-Off’ singing with old friends Hart MVC https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/it-was-hot-but-it-was-jackets-off-singing-with-old-friends-hart-mvc https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/it-was-hot-but-it-was-jackets-off-singing-with-old-friends-hart-mvc
On a beautiful sunny day in the lovely town of Guildford what could be better than exercising our vocal cords both within and after the June concert with friends Hart MVC

For those of us letting the coach take the strain, the nerves did briefly get switched on when the M3 closed its doors to us and all other travellers forcing tenacious Steve, our creative coach driver, to divert and brave single-lane country roads to deliver us not very late to our venue in Guildford.

After scattering to various hostelries for lunch we were back to the Holy Trinity Church in the High Street in time for rehearsals and the start of the main menu – the concert.

As the concert title suggested it did turn out to be ‘An Extravaganza of Music’ with RMVC’s rousing version of Carly Simon’s Let the River Run getting things going in the first half, and Hart taking the lead with the magnificent Divine Brahma from the Pearl Fishers in the second half. However, what distinguished this concert from many of our others was the choirs singing not just one or two, but nine joint numbers, and actually 10 including the encore. A real treat for both choirs, though we did all have to get to grips with some unexpected nuances in one or two pieces (any slight hiccups unseen by the audience!).

RMVC’s Patron and Hart’s President, Haydn James who had travelled to see the choirs was persuaded to conduct a choir favourite O Gymru, and following tradition the concert ended with American Trilogy.

As is so often the case, the concert was in aid of a worthy charity and in the charity chosen by Hart was Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care based in Farnham. We very much hope a sizable donation was achieved.

BUT…….one wonders, were choir behaviours true to form after the concert concluded? The Royal Oak just up from the church was witness to the answer. In a cosy, welcoming pub, with very accommodating and interested customers, the two choirs let rip, enticing some from the ‘audience’ to join in. As always, a relaxed and most enjoyable high to finish off another day to remember.

Many thanks to Hart MVC for organising the concert so well, to Hart’s Musical Director and Accompanist Kevin Jarot and Judith Morgan, and to our own MD Marion Maxey and Richard Stannard accompanying. Thanks also to the good people of Guildford for their support in the audience.

Oh, and we did enjoy the compère’s jokes!
Mon, 26 Jun 2023 00:00:00 +0000 The 2023 Beggars Fair – a fabulous Romsey tradition - and we were performing again in Romsey Abbey! https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/the-2023-beggars-fair-a-fabulous-romsey-tradition-and-we-were-performing-again-in-romsey-abbey https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/the-2023-beggars-fair-a-fabulous-romsey-tradition-and-we-were-performing-again-in-romsey-abbey
Romsey Abbey at 11.30am was full to bursting with Beggars Fair goers of all ages who, it turned out, weren’t shy about having a bit of fun choreographed by our MD Marion Maxey. The audience was first encouraged to join in with the choir ‘warm-up’; an alien process to most ears, and pretty tricky for people to get their tongues around. BUT, believe us they really did try!

Then it was over to RMVC to sing five pieces including three where once more the audience was gently coerced into taking part; With the Beat, Katherine Ruhie, Wade in the Water arranged by the same, and finally, to end the short concert, a very lively, arm-waving performance of Sweet Caroline. In addition, as a tribute to the visiting Romsey Twinners from Treviglio in Italy, we sang an old favourite, Nessun Dorma from the opera Tourandot, and later wiped the sweat from our brows when the Twinners told us they were impressed. The final three songs of the seven performed were the ever-rousing Seize the Day, He Ain’t Heavy He’s My Brother, and Wellaman a traditional New Zealand Sea shanty.

Photographs by Philip Clewer

Onlookers wouldn’t have known, though we did, and it was our turn to be impressed. Amongst our choristers were several new Choir members who in the very short time of them being with RMVC were able not only to take part in the concert, but to do so with confidence, knowing the music and words. We were, and are, delighted to have them and we hope they will be joined by other ‘newbies’ in the near future.

So, to sum up it was a very happy day in a musically and culturally happy Romsey with the added bonus that the sun shone!
Thu, 13 Jul 2023 00:00:00 +0000 SOUND WAVES, a concert in support of the RNLI and in tribute to the late RMVC chorister Owen Davis who for many years did so much for the charity. 15 July 2023. https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/sound-waves-a-concert-in-support-of-the-rnli-and-in-tribute-to-the-late-rmvc-chorister-owen-davis-who-for-many-years-did-so-much-for-the-charity.-15-july-2023. https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/sound-waves-a-concert-in-support-of-the-rnli-and-in-tribute-to-the-late-rmvc-chorister-owen-davis-who-for-many-years-did-so-much-for-the-charity.-15-july-2023.
As we gathered, once more in Romsey Abbey during the Romsey Festival, we were joined by guest choir, The Orpheus Singers from Hadleigh in Essex to stage a concert originally scheduled to be held in 2020, but like so many things fell prey to the Pandemic. Joining us also on the night was the super-talented flautist Anna Loadman performing with RMVC for a second time.

The programme of music offered saw The Orpheus Singers performing five pieces in each half of the concert. In the first half singing a set of evocative and contrasting arrangements of Japanese songs called Furusato, and in the second half, with a very different flavour, the Beatles medley Here There and Everywhere, Eleanor Rigby, Hey Jude and Yesterday.

As strong supporters of the RNLI, RMVC’s choice of music in part followed the themes of sea and water in the songs Let the River Run, Away from the Roll of the Sea and Wellerman, a New Zealand sea shanty. The choir also performed old favourites including Chattanooga Choo Choo, Bring Him Home, Nessun Dorma, and the always moving Prayer of the Children, in which once again we acknowledged the ongoing troubles in Ukraine.

The well-known Rogers and Hammerstein You’ll Never Walk Alone was performed as the joint Finale.

Alongside the two choirs the audience was treated to the beautiful playing of Anna Loadman, who, even as she is studying A level music, has performed in both Winchester and Norwich Cathedrals along with other venues. Her two pieces played were Morceau de Concours by Faure and Waltz in B minor op.69 by Chopin.

The concert was followed by a convivial and musically vocal AfterGlow, with an abundance of food produced by the RMVC Ladies Support Group led by RMVC’s Chairman’s wife Lesley Cleary – many thanks ladies you did us proud once again.

OTHER THANKS

To:

The RNLI representatives who came to the concert to talk about the work of the charity. Raising funds, whatever the cause is not easy at the best of times, but with the rising cost of everything this is definitely not the best of times.

However, we are delighted to say that back in March our last-minute Special Concert in the United Reformed Church in Romsey in support of the DEC Turkey/Syria Earthquake Appeal allowed us to make a welcome donation of £1000 to the Appeal. All thanks must go to our choristers for playing their part, our friends the Romsey Youth Choir, performing alongside RMVC, and of course the generosity of the audience.

THE SECOND CAUSE

More recently in July when the Orpheus Singers and Anna Loadman joined RMVC in Romsey Abbey, the cause chosen to benefit from the concert was the RNLI. RMVC has supported the charity in the past, and for the Orpheus Singers it is they say ‘a cause close to our hearts’. Chris Green is the Chairman of the Romsey Fundraising Branch of the RNLI and it was to him that RMVC Chairman Kevin Cleary, Deputy Chairman Jim Philbin and Treasurer Robert Le Grice presented a cheque for £2010. This one was however different. The idea for the concert was that of Hampshire Police MVC and the organisation for the concert shared between the four choirs. Assembling over 100 choristers in the right places at the right time can be a challenge. Fortunately, during a long afternoon all went well and the concert was all set to begin……

FIRST HALF

A moving video of the work of the Air Ambulance Service held everyone’s attention before our own Concert Secretary Mike Bull took to the microphone to welcome all, and especially our host for the evening, BBC South Today Presenter Jo Kent. Then all choristers were brought to their feet by Richard Childress, Basingstoke MVC’s Musical Director and Conductor, with Accompanist Brian Budden, to perform a piece aptly called What Would I Do Without My Music. After this the first half running order saw Hampshire Police MVC sing two songs including the popular Alexander’s Ragtime Band and Fly Me to the Moon; Basingstoke MVC came forward to sing Stand By Me and Fields of Gold, followed by RMVC performing it’s versions of He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother, and the ever rousing Bui Doi. Finally, Rushmoor Odd Fellows gave the audience some more old favourites performing Yesterday and the Londonderry Air.

A second combined choirs piece Speed Your Journey, conducted by Hampshire Police Musical Director Geoff Porter with Accompanist Sian Bibby-Shah concluded the concert’s first half.

At the beginning of the second half Richard Corbett, the CEO of Hampshire and IOW Air Ambulance, gave us all, audience and choristers alike, the reasons why the charity is so needed and why it is only through donations and events such as this concert, that it’s clinical and other teams can do the work they do.

So, with that still in their in minds, the combined choirs stood together once more to perform Morte Criste – When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, conducted by Philip Viveash-Brainch, Rushmoor Odd Fellows Musical Director with Accompanist Andrew Harrap. Following this, in order were Romsey, Rushmoor, Hampshire Police and Basingstoke choirs each singing a further two songs as below:

RMVC: Seize the Day & Prayer of the Children. Rushmoor Odd Fellows MVC: What a Wonderful World & When the Saints Go Marching In. Hampshire Police MVC: High on a Hill & The Radetsky March. Basingstoke MVC: Bridge Over Troubled Water & Don’t Stop Believing.

AND SO, WE DREW TO A CLOSE

An impactful, uplifting finale, is always a favourite, and for MVC’s American Trilogy so often does that very job so very well. Conducted by our own Musical Director Marion Maxey with Richard Stannard Accompanist, the four choirs most definitely did ‘give it their all’ and without doubt the audience loved it, testament to this everyone remained seated for the encore of What Would I Do Without My Music, completing a brilliant evening of song!

THANKS

To Jo Kent – you are a star to give up your time.

To the Choir’s concert organisers – you made a difficult job look easy!

To the Musical Directors and Accompanists -without your talents and dedication it simply cannot be.

To our generous sponsors – your contributions mean so more can be given to the Air Ambulance.

To our lovely audience – so hope you enjoyed the concert as much as we enjoyed you being there.

POST SCRIPT

We will let the accompanying photographs tell you what happened after the concert finished!
Tue, 24 Oct 2023 00:00:00 +0000 RMVC support for the Romsey Food Bank https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/rmvc-support-for-the-romsey-food-bank https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/rmvc-support-for-the-romsey-food-bank
Continuing RMVC’s support for the Romsey Food Bank , choir Chairman Kevin Cleary presented a cheque for £150 to the charity in time for Christmas.
Mon, 08 Jan 2024 00:00:00 +0000 RMVC gives Flowers to Romsey Station https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/rmvc-gives-flowers-to-romsey-station https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/rmvc-gives-flowers-to-romsey-station
Choir member Peter Larkin’s legendary carpentry skills were once more brought into play in constructing a beautiful planter, complete with flowering daffodils, to sit outside the reception at Romsey Station for the enjoyment of the Station’s passengers and staff. However, it took both him and Ron Taplin to carry it into pride of place, with a warning to watch their backs!

Also, cleverly situated above the planter is a poster board giving information to everyone coming and going about the Choir’s up and coming concerts. As someone we know would say ‘What can be better than that!’

Well done Peter and Ron, RMVC is as ever grateful for your sterling efforts.
Mon, 19 Feb 2024 00:00:00 +0000 DID WE MAKE ST DAVID PROUD - WE DO HOPE SO - I March 2024 https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/did-we-make-st-david-proud-we-do-hope-so https://www.romseymvc.co.uk/blog/did-we-make-st-david-proud-we-do-hope-so
We may be an English Choir, but there’s no doubt we can sing in Welsh, we have some Welsh members, and we’ve have sung with Welsh Male Choirs, so for RMVC celebrating St David’s Day was, as they say, a must!

The venue for our concert was the lovely St Michael’s Church in the heart of Southampton, and the Choir really did what our poster promised, bringing to the audience a multi-lingual, multi-genre medley of marvellous music. Directed as always by our wonderful Musical Director, Marion Maxey, with the super talented Brian Budden as the evening’s accompanist, we performed throughout with choir members usual passion and love of singing.

Joining us on the night was Katie Salomon a wonderful harpist, whose exquisite playing gave us a series of Welsh pieces very warmly received, not just by the audience, but also by those of us in the choir.

Aside from the highlight of Katie’s performance, RMVC once more sang the poignant Prayer of the Children, and the impact of the emotive messages and singing rendered the audience momentarily silent as it ended before offering the choir its heartfelt applause. Not to be forgotten in the highlights were a solo by David Grey in Working Man, and a duet featuring Choir President Keith Lawrenson and Choir Chairman Kevin Cleary in O Gymru.

The traditional, and much enjoyed, afterglow on this occasion was held in the nearby Masonic Hall before the adrenalin filled singers went home to sleep and then prepare for a second concert in Romsey Abbey the next day.
Tue, 05 Mar 2024 00:00:00 +0000
